We had the good fortune of connecting with Asher Weiss and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Asher, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I came from the professional sports industry before this, working for the Golden State Warriors and the Orlando Magic for several years. Along the way, I learned about the many pain points on both sides of the ticketing industry, the venue/event producer side, as well as the fan side. As the ticketing industry has evolved over the last several years, things have certainly changed but not in many ways that clearly benefit event producers, venues, artists or fans. Ticketing has become too much about the ticketing provider and their incentives, as opposed to something that benefits those putting on the shows and the true fans looking to attend them.

Hidden fees without true explanation surprise consumers at checkout, fraudulent tickets have flooded the market, bots run rampant making it hard for normal people to buy primary tickets, secondary market prices are unaffordable for the average consumer and now speculative tickets (where scalpers sell tickets they don’t even yet own) continues to become prevalent. However, I realized that ticketing doesn’t need to be this way, so I started Tixologi! Tixologi is committed to putting event producers, venues and teams in control of their ticketing and creating a better ticketing world moving forward.

What should our readers know about your business?
While many of my friends and peers growing up took similar paths after high school, I knew for certain I was on a different path. I grew up in Toronto, but I always knew I wanted to move elsewhere for university and when it was time to pick, I happened to choose a small school in California (Claremont McKenna College) that no one in Toronto had ever even heard about.

When it came time to get my first job growing up, I realized I didn’t just want a normal summer job like my friends. So, I started my own business at the age of 8 and had several businesses after that during the summer, but also sometimes during the school year.

When it was time to get a job after college, I opted to go into professional sports instead of the traditional consulting or tech jobs that my friends were choosing.

I like to believe that all of these decisions shaped who I am today and ultimately led me to create Tixologi (my current business). While some of those businesses growing up were small, I learned valuable lessons along the way about creating something from nothing, selling new products/services, hiring and firing people, etc. And from my time in professional sports, I learned more about the sports and entertainment industries than I ever thought I could.

All of that being said, when I had the idea for Tixologi, I felt that I had found something that I not only was excited about and interested in working on but also something where I felt confident I had the knowledge and network to succeed in the space. It was time to take the leap and set out on a roller coaster of a journey that has been the last 3 years!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA is one of my favorite cities in the world and while I didn’t grow up here, I always wish I did.

– Shopping and having lunch on Abbott Kinney (my favorite street in the whole city)
– Hanging out in Manhattan or Hermosa beach for the day and grabbing sandwiches at one of the local corner stores
– Driving through the streets of Beverly Hills to check out the fabulous homes of the rich and famous

In terms of food, I have hundreds of recos by my favorites are:
– The best Italian meal at Antico Nuovo
– Pastries/brunch at République
– Bagels at Layla
– A breezy and yummy lunch at Malibu Farm
– A perfect prime rib at Lawry’s the prime rib
– Sandwiches at The Cheese Store of Beverly Hills

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a shoutout to my parents. It may sound clichéd, but they are the reason I am an entrepreneur today and have always guided me through difficult times.

Over 30 years ago, my mom started her own marketing agency and she and my dad have grown and managed it together since. Our family has always had that entrepreneurial mindset and they’ve taught me that anything is possible. They’ve taught me to look for areas that could be better or industries that are ripe for disruption and hone in on what I could build to totally disrupt and improve them. They’ve taught me how to handle the highs and lows of running your own business. And they’ve most importantly taught me that people are always the most challenging yet important part of business.

Because of them, I’ve started 6 ventures to date across multiple industries and feel as though I will always have that entrepreneurial fire within me.
