We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashlee Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashlee, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind my business started when I was younger. I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur and I’ve had a passion for fashion and cooking ever since I could remember. In the beginning I chose to focus on fashion and started a vintage clothing brand called Third Irie. After a short time I realized I loss passion for that industry and decided to pivot into the culinary world. During the pandemic I had a lot of time at home a decided to dive deeper into cake decorating as a fun an fulfilling hobby. After sharing my designs on social media and giving away samples, I was urged to transition this new passion from hobby to a thriving business. That is how Ashlee Alexandra Cakes was born!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Moving from Cleveland to Los Angeles was a major transition, particularly in terms of lifestyle. Adjusting to a new city meant that I had to learn the area and find the neighborhoods that felt like home. Eventually, I settled on West LA as my preferred location. However, building a community in a new city was a challenge, and I had to actively seek out opportunities and connections since I didn’t know anyone in Los Angeles. This wasn’t my first experience living in a big city, as I had previously lived in New York City for a year, which gave me a glimpse into the realities of living in a largely populated city.
As a self-taught cake decorator, I have cultivated an unwavering dedication to the creation of sumptuous, high-end cakes that exude elegance and refinement. My passion lies in crafting each and every cake from scratch, using high ingredients too create a delectable flavor profile. With a keen eye for design, I channel my artistic vision into each cake, ensuring that every detail is carefully considered and every element is executed with precision.
At the heart of my creative process is an unyielding commitment to delivering a truly exceptional customer experience. I understand that each cake is a personal and cherished creation, and as such, I approach each order with the utmost care and attention to detail. I am dedicated to delivering an unparalleled level of quality and service, ensuring that each cake not only looks magnificent but also delights the senses with an irresistible taste that lingers long after the last bite.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting Los Angeles I would center our trip around food, ambiance and relaxation. I would want to start each day with some physical activity such as a hike at Runyon Canyon, The Culver City Stairs or a Lagree class as Solid Core in Culver City. Then we would check out a few Coffee shops including: Ten by Bar Nine, Love Coffee Bar in Santa Monica and Equator Coffees at Ivy Station to name a few. During the day we would check out Manhattan Beach, The Getty’s Villa, Korean Spa’s and some wine tasting in Malibu. For dinner we would check out Sparrow’s Downtown, Cast and Plow in Marina Del Rey and Ospi in Venice.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shoutout my dad Dalton Patterson. He has been an entrepreneur way before I was even thought of and has helped inspire me to become one myself. He has advised me in every stage of my life and helped encourage me through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and life in general. He has instilled in me that passion, determination and diligence is the key to becoming successful and I am grateful to have him not only as a father but as a mentor in life.
