Meet Ashley Benitez | Postpartum Doula, Pediatric Sleep Specialist, Parent Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Benitez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The most important decision I made that contributed to my success was committing to learning the fundamentals of running a business. Being a doula requires so much empathy, compassion, and intuition—it’s deeply personal work. But at the same time, clients are paying for a service, and it’s still a business. Establishing a nurturing yet professional and structured business framework has been key to my growth.
While many doulas provide exceptional care, I’ve noticed that some struggle with the business side of things—whether it’s creating systems, setting boundaries, or handling finances. With companies and insurance providers increasingly covering doula work, it’s more important than ever to approach this profession as a business if you want to succeed. Balancing heart-centered care with strategy is what allowed me to grow, serve my clients better, and create a sustainable career.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Your Devoted Doula was created with the intention of filling the gap in support for new parents, offering a safe and welcoming space for families to ease into one of life’s most transformative journeys. We believe in providing compassionate, non-judgmental care throughout the transition into parenthood. At the heart of our mission is the understanding that this journey is not only about nurturing a new baby, but also about the personal rebirth and growth of the mother herself.
Building this business certainly wasn’t without its challenges—like any venture, there were plenty of bumps along the way. But my passion for what we do has always driven me to push through. I took a proactive approach by diving into business courses, podcasts, and seeking advice from other professionals about how to run a successful business. My commitment to continuous learning has been a key factor in overcoming obstacles and staying focused on our mission.
What excites me most is the real difference we’re making by creating a space where families feel genuinely supported. I want people to know that Your Devoted Doula is dedicated to reshaping how we approach and speak about parenthood, women’s health, and maternal care.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Southern California is such a perfect spot because there’s always something exciting to do, no matter what you’re into. We’d definitely take in the stunning desert sunset and the fresh ocean breeze along the coastline. A trip to Big Bear would be a must for a peaceful getaway into the forests, offering a whole different vibe from the city. And of course, we’d dive into Long Beach (my hometown),which has a genuine sense of community that makes it truly so special—a perfect mix of laid-back beach vibes and vibrant, creative city life.
When it comes to food, LA has it all. You can find anything your heart desires, from street tacos to upscale dining. A food coma is practically mandatory during the trip! Whether you’re looking for incredible views, nature, or good eats, Southern California never disappoints.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I love this question because I wholeheartedly believe in giving credit where it’s due. My journey wouldn’t be what it is today without the incredible people who have supported, encouraged, and guided me along the way. While there are so many individuals I’m grateful for, there are three people who certainly played important roles in shaping my career.
To my sister-in-law, who came to my rescue during an exceptionally difficult moment in my motherhood journey and gave me the support I so desperately needed. It was through that moment of care and selflessness that she unknowingly inspired me to become a postpartum doula and offer that same support to other women.
Next, my first doula mentor, Elizabeth Clarke from Looma Birth, truly deserves a shoutout. When I was starting out, she generously shared her expertise, resources, and even referred clients my way. Her guidance was instrumental in helping me understand the basics and establish a strong foundation for my work.
Lastly, my husband has been one of my greatest supporters. In the middle of a pandemic AND new parenthood, he gave me the space to completely shift carriers and start my own business. He’s helped me learn business strategies, brainstorm ways to expand my reach, and encouraged me to think bigger in order for me to scale. He’s also pushed me to take risks—something I’m definitely more hesitant to do at times, but I know is necessary for growth.
