Meet Ashley Nguyen | Permanent Makeup Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Nguyen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, how do you think about risk?
I believe that taking risks are necessary to be successful sometimes. However, I did not have this mentality before my career in the beauty industry. I was a pharmacist for 14 years. Life was comfortable. It was a very stable career with great financial benefits. Yet I found myself lacking the passion and enthusiasm for my job. After many years, I’ve come to realize that there are more important things in life than just making money. I wanted to spend more time with my kids while they are still young. I didn’t want to live my life with any regrets, wondering how life would be if I pursued my interest. So, I decided to quit my pharmacy job and try something new by becoming a permanent makeup artist. This was the biggest risk I have ever taken in my life. Stepping out of my comfort zone and pursuing a new career with no background in business and marketing was terrifying. Fast forward, I’m in my second year of my small beauty business; I’m still learning, growing and working hard to build it. It has been a roller coaster ride with many ups and downs. However, I’m embracing the challenges and learning from them. Taking risks with my new career has truly changed my life. I have a better quality of life and happier now. My schedule is more flexible and work is more rewarding than I’ve imagined. Now, I’m making women feel beautiful by enhancing their natural beauty through the art of permanent makeup.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Growing up, the idea of tattooing someone’s face never crossed my mind. However, I fell in love with the art of permanent makeup after getting my own brows done and seeing how a set of brows not only can transform a person’s face, but can also give them a boost of self-confidence. This opportunity to make such an impact is what has kept me focused and inspired to continue learning new skills to advance my artistry.
I specialize in Ombre Powder Brows, Microblading with Shading and Lip Blush tattoos. Since permanent makeup is worn 24/7, my style is to create the most natural and personalized results for each of my clients. Each set of brows and lips are custom designed based on each client’s unique features, skin tone and preferences. I love creating subtle enhancements to highlight my client’s natural beauty.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Orange County is near the coastline and is known for its beautiful weather, so what better way to take advantage of this than to visit Laguna Beach. This is one of my favorite beaches because of the various activities for almost anyone. There are shaded grass areas which are great for family picnics or just to unwind and enjoy the scenic view and cool ocean breezes. Besides the arrays of water activities, my family loves to explore the tide pools and take casual walks to check out many one-of-a-kind shops. For lunch, I’d recommend Mamma D’s Italian Kitchen in Newport Beach. They are known for their authentic homemade Italian food and it is only a 10-minute drive from Laguna Beach. For Happy Hours or Dinner, The Recess Room in Fountain Valley has a great selection of Modern American tapas, beer, wine and handcrafted cocktails.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to my amazing husband of 15 years, Mark, for being at my side as my biggest supporter. His positivity, patience and unconditional love is what has kept me going through the many challenges of life. I want to thank him for believing in me, putting me and the kids first, and working hard so I can spend more time on my craft and with the family! He is truly my biggest blessing!
