We had the good fortune of connecting with Atavia Bishop and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Atavia, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work-life balance is big for me. The problem is when you’re running a business and it’s only you or only you leading a team you can feel like you can never give enough. Everyone and everything is depending on how quickly you can complete a project and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. It is also easy to forget that if you do too much of one thing without taking a break you’ll eventually crash (everyone crashes differently). So you are always stuck in the middle between should I keep going or should I give myself a rest? or Am I resting too much and not working enough? I would say it’s still something that I am working on. I am learning when it’s time to work get to work and when it’s time to let go do that! Entrepreneurship allows you to be the person in charge of your schedule, your work hours, your lunch breaks, and your personal life. The hardest part is no day, week, or month is the same as the previous. My work style usually depends on completing the goal at hand, I don’t really focus on hours though. I could work for 3 hours or 12 hours it all depends on what I would like to accomplish. I also like to vacation and my favorite thing to do is work on vacation that could be a good or bad thing but it works for me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Of course not! When you work for yourself you have to learn balance. Balance in your everyday life, the balance between when it’s time to work and when it’s time to escape, the balance between when clients can contact you and when they cannot. It’s actually very easy to drive yourself crazy because everything is up to you, that’s a good and bad thing. You have to budget because you may have a million clients you working with this week but next week you could have 0. So learning to save and budget was very important to me. Other than that I had to learn to have confidence in myself and my craft. You won’t always get the support that you want and it can sometimes be discouraging but you can’t stop you have to believe you’re killing it. You have to be your biggest fan, supporter, and critic. Me personally I didn’t feel much support from the people that I thought would but I get so much love from my clients and that’s all that matters to me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My absolute favorite location in Los Angeles is the beach. It’s actually where I would spend the whole day. But besides that I would do a little shopping on Melrose, I would do lunch at Bossa Nova, maybe a nice walk on the beach, go to a dispensary and I would do dinner at Nobu. I don’t really go out much but I would incorporate street tacos into my night festivities
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m really loving Womanaire Club (@womanaireclub). It’s an online community for female entrepreneurs by Milano Di Rouge. I feel like she really uses her platform to inspire all women entrepreneurs of all calibers in a down-to-earth and genuine way. I enjoy the live streams that she does once a week with other female bosses. It takes a lot to impress me but I must say each week I feel very inspired. If your starting a business or a business owner I highly suggest you tune in.
