We had the good fortune of connecting with Auset Whatley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Auset, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
If you would have asked me this question about 2-3 years ago, I would have laughed and continued on my journey as a General Manager. I have always enjoyed being in front of the camera and bringing joy to those around me, even in the simplest of ways. When I was younger and used to watch TV, I would always tell myself “I wanna be on TV! I can do that!”. As I got older of course things changed, life happened, and my career choices always changed. It wasn’t until a great friend of mine , Jazzmenn, spoke life back into my childhood dreams of becoming an actress and model that I decided to give it a second thought. She gave me just the right amount of support I needed to get started and take off . At first, my reason of WHY I wanted to become an actress and model was really only for myself and to “be on tv”. However, my why now is much bigger than myself ; I want to show others that it’s really never to late to give your dreams a chance to LIVE!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have to say, to even get the opportunity to call myself A SIGNED model and actress is a big enough accomplishment in itself for me. You know, a lot of people hear the words “actor/actress” and automatically assume you are on tv. Oh no baby, this is a very tedious process! To even get an AUDITION from top casting agents is an accomplishment that many people overlook. I am naturally a big risk taker , so many major opportunities I hardly ever decline. Big risk = big rewards right?
To ask if my journey is easy , the answer is HECK no. I have gotten rejected more times than I can count. I’ve had to maintain a home life WHILE pursing and self funding my career, maintain my grades in school, deal with losses, try and keep a healthy lifestyle and more. With all that I do on a regular basis, I’m blessed to still have the opportunity to work as an actress and model and pursue my dreams. There is a lot I have had to endure, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. It’s all apart of my story. I have learned many of lessons and tips throughout my journey , but one of my biggest takeaways is that most times its not what you know, but WHO you know. I come from a long line of resilient women and men , so folding is never an option honey. As I continue on my journey, I really want the world to know that with God anything is possible, stay TRUE to yourself first and foremost, and TAKE RISKS! This game we call life, will always seek to change you for its own selfish reasons.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay I must confess I am THE WORST tour guide ever. Seriously. I have to use a GPS to go right around the corner. If something ever happens to me and I am not home, send the
SWAT, FEDS, and the President to get me home, okay? Both me and my best friend will just be looking lost at each other. She’s better off in the streets alone hahaha. But on a more serious note, I really do just enjoy seeing where the wind takes me. I love the restaurant Mr. Chow in Beverly Hills. Great service, good food, and great music. Hermosa beach is a must and of course visiting all of the museums in LA!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
MAN! You know , there are so many people that have had such a huge impact on my journey and helped me get to where I am today that it would be impossible to name them all. From my mother , & father , to my coaches , family and close friends who let me sleep on their couch; there are just too many to count! They know who they are for sure . But most importantly , I give all the glory to God. If you really knew the details of my life, the way many of my close friends and family do , you would probably say the same thing. There is no other way, but by God himself that I am here today to share my story with you.
