We had the good fortune of connecting with Autumn Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Autumn, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
The single most important decision I made that contributed to my success is to change my mind. Whenever a decision or an action evokes a feeling of fear, doubt, anger or any low-vibrating energy, I say out loud to myself “Decide in this moment to change your mind.”. That doesn’t mean I don’t feeling the feeling or the energy, I do but I give myself a limit, depending on the situation, then change my mind. instead of “Why’s is going wrong?” I decide to to change my mind and ask “What is this teaching me?”.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Beautiful.co is a holistic beauty service and wellness company. We help multifaceted black people achieve their beauty goal while making time for self-care. We believe that good skin is health skin and to achieve it, make as much time as you can for it because it means more time for you.

I am most proud of being able to help people see their skin differently and feel much better about themselves. I get excited whenever they tell me they are seeing the progress from dong the work. Skincare and selfceare go hand in hand to me. Taking a little time to take care of what I see in the mirror everyday and feeling really good with the results from doing so, sets the tone for the day. I feel unstoppable, so when my clients start to feel the same and tell me, that’s a joy I can not even describe.

Honestly, I got to be where I am in business by just going for it. When New York City Started to open up after the lockdown in 2020, I was presented with the opportunity to rent a space. It was crazy I can admit but I did it, I went for it and been able to keep our doors opened ever since. I’ m most proud of that. It hasn’t been easy, especially going into our second year. I had to learn how to maintain expenses now that we knew what things cost and maintain clientele.

Along the way however the one of the many things I have learned is how to speak up more. being an entrepreneur I’m learning that you have to ask for help if you do not know how to get things done. That means building a network of people across different industries that you can reach out to for help.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Here in New York !

Picnic on Randalls or Governor’s Island
