We had the good fortune of connecting with Azul Aguamarina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Azul, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Well, that is a big question, I think I would divide it into three stages.
In the first stage, while creating at my studio, I try to translate my emotions onto the canvas, with gestures that can capture the present moment or my current emotion. Painting serves me as a form of meditation, and the creative process is a part of my personal -therapeutic- solo journey.
The studio time involves achieving a state of creative flow, where I feel fulfilled, engaged, and connected with my artistic process.
After this, from an artistic standpoint, success entails the capacity to connect with an audience and evoke emotional responses, provoke thoughts, or inspire change in others.
And the pinnacle of success would involve collaborating with other artists and going deeper into ideas.
A recent experience during my last solo exhibition in LA, titled “Dancing Spirits,” exemplified this perfectly.
An exceptional choreographer named Zoe Rappaport crafted three dance pieces inspired by my exhibition’s theme, and having the opportunity to collaborate with her and the dancers was an immense blessing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The recent body of artwork I have been painting is deeply inspired by the concept of the spirit realm—a realm where the living can establish a connection with those who have departed and unite as one. It is a place where spirits can dance harmoniously, transcending physical form, and still feel deeply connected.
After a dear friend passed away, these sentiments invaded me during the creative process of painting, giving birth to the series entitled “Dancing Spirits.”
In my visual interpretation of this profound thought, I employ gentle and ethereal color palettes, precise color gestures, and the impulse of what the spirit commands.
For this ethereal feeling, the watery, translucent way of applying the acrylic was fundamental, aligning with the spirit’s essence.
“Dancing Spirits” encapsulates the essence of movement and the continuous flow of energy in the vast expanse of the universe, even when “fully” gone.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love visiting as many art exhibitions as possible. Galleries like Hauser and Wirth, Bergamot Station Arts Center, the Hammer Museum, LACMA, the Getty, and the Huntington Library are places I try to go to as often as possible.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people come to mind. I believe that none of us are where we are without the impact of a multitude.
But if I had to pick, my husband Madison has consistently demonstrated my worth even before I recognized it within myself. Also, my family, including my parents and sisters, have been with me every step of the way. Their early support is something I still lean on.
I would also like to shout out my dear friend, Jacinta, who has supported me since the beginning of my artistic path, helping me find and develop my Artistic voice through the years, but mostly inspiring me through her art and her strength as an artist.
Lastly, a book that has profoundly impacted me—The Artist’s Way. As an ardent admirer, I recommend this book to anyone feeling the creative call, for it has helped me tremendously on my journey.
Thanks so much for having me!
