Meet Baby Bulldog: Artist and Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Baby Bulldog and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Baby, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Keeping a schedule for myself during writing periods!
I identified the time of day when I was most productive and built a schedule around that. I am not a night owl at all, my brain shuts off after about 5pm, 6pm at the latest but I also don’t function before 8am. So, I wake up around 9, eat a healthy breakfast (also an important habit!), work out (another one!) and then go in the studio from about 11-5pm, making sure to take a break for lunch. Eating healthy and working out regularly are two other very important habits that have helped me succeed.
Another is knowing when to call it quits.
When I’m writing and I feel like something isn’t quite going down the path I intended, two things will happen. Either I move forward on the new path and fall into something I love or I move forward, get stuck and need to step away. Getting lost down a rabbit hole never really gets me anywhere. I always leave time to explore a new path but if it isn’t working that is when I’ll walk away and come back to it another time sometimes maybe not at all. This keeps me moving forward and in line with what wants to come naturally.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Berklee trained drummer and self-taught producer, songwriter. I started my professional career as a touring session drummer, and it’s something I still do today. I made the switch to producing and songwriting in 2017, when I created my solo project, Baby Bulldog. It was not easy at all, I was absolutely terrified!
I had never written or sang lead before, and had no idea how to use any music software other than hitting the play button for tracks. I was fortunate to have Luke in my life as a friend, and mentor. He really changed the game for me. He not only believed in what I was doing but I was also able to watch and learn during our sessions together. This was so and still is such an effective way for me to learn. I am very hands on, so sometimes youtube videos just don’t sink in as much. I was able to get up and running with Ableton, engineering and producing my own music and later on, even taking a hand in mixing!
I want the world to know that if you really put your mind to something, it is possible. I knew I had the drive and the motivation. I wanted to prove I could do it, that I could increase that low percentage of female producers, to help inspire other women and push another step forward for LGBTQ visibility. This is still what drives me today.
I learned to learn into your network. If people believe in you, take pride in that and work together. Use your resources to continue to learn and better yourself.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love this!
Let’s tackle the food portion first because that is by far my favorite! I would have to take them to Spoke, it’s in Frogtown along the LA River path. Its a bicycle cafe, so a lot of cyclists chill here but I just go for the food and coffee. They have the best waffle fries I’ve ever had, and dare I say, the best avocado toast in LA! Everything I’ve had to eat here is amazing. They also have great coffee and local beers. I want to say that the beans come from a guy that roasts the beans out of his garage in Atwater…but don’t quote me!
Another favorite restaurant I’d bring them to would be Little Dom’s! Ugh, what a dream. Little Dom’s is in Los Feliz, and I’d take them specifically on Monday night for their Monday Night Supper. It’s a three course meal for $25. Classic Italian AND $20 bottles of wine. YOU CANNOT BEAT THIS! Maybe to cap off the trip we’d go back for weekend brunch because that is also amazing. Everything I’ve ever had here is amazing, you can’t go wrong.
Pine & Crane is another spot for sure! Very affordable, right in Silver Lake. It is a Taiwanese restaurant that serves up boba with salt creme and their most popular dish, Dan Dan Noodles. They are thin noodles tossed in a peanut sauce with vinegar, chili oil topped with cucumber and cilantro. My favorites are the beef roll, and minced pork on rice. Oh, and all of those dishes are UNDER $10!!!
Villa’s Tacos is another favorite! We’d have to put our order in on Tuesday afternoon for the weekend because they sell out that fast! They operate out of Highland Park out of a backyard. The tortillas are hand-pressed, blue corn and the meats are all mesquite grilled! They also serve up all the fixins, including the best guac I’ve ever had and hibiscus-pickled onions for no extra charge! All of the salsas are homemade and I like to use them in my own home cooked adventures when I have leftovers. Truly the best.
For drinks, Salazar is a fun time. Also located on the LA River, it has a relaxed outdoor atmosphere where you can get all the margaritas you want and the tacos are delicious.
Black Cat is another Silver Lake favorite. With indoor and outdoor seating, grab a beer and hang out!
Silver Lake Wines on Thursday for a wine tasting! Thursday offers a 3-4 flight tasting for $15, showcasing winemakers in Cali. Often times the winemakers are there for the tasting as well so you can really learn about what you are drinking. They lay out fresh bread and butter for free while your sipping, and there is usually a food truck parked out front. Sometimes it’s Triple Beam pizza, another fave! Should I be a food critic?!
Verdugo Bar is another spot I like. Usually very chill, outdoor vibes.
For outdoor adventures, I’d take them on the Griffith Park Observatory trail. Get some Hollywood sign pics and check out the view.
I’d bring them to the Hollywood Farmers market for a chance to experience Hollywood in a different way, nestled next to the legendary Sound Factory and Amoeba Music.
At this point we wouldn’t be able to move because we would be too full. Woops!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to Luke from the band, Coast Modern!
