Meet Bao Duong | Barber & Videographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Bao Duong and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bao, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business has been more than just a step-by-step process—it’s been a journey of discovering who I am and growing along the way. I’ve always believed that having my own business would give me the freedom to express myself and my creativity without any limits. I love art and barbering, so I wanted to create a space where I could blend both passions and offer a unique style and vibe to my clients.
When I was 15, I started my own barbershop back in Vietnam. It was a tiny shop tucked away in a small alley, but it became really popular, especially among the Vietnamese hip-hop and artist crowd. It was amazing to see how something small could make such a big impact in my community.
Leaving Vietnam with my family was tough. Saying goodbye to my hometown and the barbershop I poured my heart into was emotional. But when I came to the U.S., I knew deep inside that I wanted to build something new, just like I did back home. Having my own business has always been a dream—it’s where I feel most like myself, where I feel energized and where my creativity thrives.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being part of Pride and Purpose Studio fills me with pride. But let me tell you, the journey here wasn’t a smooth ride. Moving halfway across the globe brought a lot of changes, especially dealing with a new language and finding my way in this new space. It was a challenge, but not impossible.
When I arrived, the language barrier was like a puzzle I needed to solve daily. It wasn’t easy, but my determination, humility, and willingness to learn kept me going. Pride and Purpose Studio became more than just a workplace; it was my sanctuary, a place where my passion for barbering flourished.
I understood the importance of being humble and willing to learn. For me, being a barber is setting myself apart by recognizing that hair isn’t just about a quick cleanup; it’s a spiritual journey entwined with the most important moments of your timeline. This perspective shaped my approach to barbering, turning it into a personalized and meaningful experience.
Despite the hurdles, I took every opportunity to absorb knowledge and grow. The cultural shift and adapting to a different work environment taught me valuable lessons in resilience and humility. I faced uncertainties, moments of self-doubt, but each challenge became a stepping stone.
What sets my barbering journey apart is not just the skill I’ve honed, but the story behind it—a story of a journey halfway across the world, a story of adapting to new surroundings, a story of triumph over challenges. I want the world to know that my journey, though filled with obstacles, is a testament to the power of passion, a humble approach, and perseverance.
