We had the good fortune of connecting with Barbora Samieian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Barbora, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
The single most important contributing factor to scaling our businesses has been growing our family in tandem with growing the business. This has given me the confidence to focus on the big picture, expanding my perspective of what truly matters, and lean on support in both my personal and professional lives. Going to work gives me great joy and energy, fuels my creativity, and, in turn, makes me a better parent. Having children has given me perspective. As passionate and ambitious as I am, I’m grateful to have healthy kids who demand my presence. Nothing makes you focus and be ‘in the moment’ like being at a playground with four kids running in four different directions. It’s not always easy to unplug as an entrepreneur, but I try my best, as they are growing up too fast.

As an introvert, I also love my solo time or 1:1 time with friends. For me, this often means re-charging with a ‘coffee to stay’ or on a walk with a friend. I’ve tried to pencil this more intentionally into my calendar, even if it’s early in the morning before the kids are awake.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the co-founder of a furniture brand called Sundays. Sundays is known for timeless, high-quality furniture that is relaxed and made for real life. The Sundays aesthetic is upscale, yet easygoing – made with solid woods, soft corners, and natural tones. We’re proud to make high quality, durable pieces, at a great price point.

Initially, starting a business was a chance to have a creative outlet and side hustle outside of my full-time job. I’ve always been passionate about design and Sundays gave me the opportunity to start a business with three of my friends and family, which felt like the ultimate collaborative project with some of the people I admire most. I love running a business, in particular, the ability to wear multiple hats every day and build community with our team members and customers.

One of my favorite quotes is: Perfection is the enemy of good. Done is better than perfect. An early boss once asked me if I was a perfectionist when there was this one project I couldn’t seem to let go of. It was a pivotal moment for me because he introduced me to the idea that it’s okay not to strive for perfection. It was liberating to realize that you can care deeply about something without insisting it to be flawless. Life itself is imperfect, after all. The key takeaway was to put your work out into the world and then iterate and improve as needed.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ever since Sundays opened up a showroom at Platform LA in Culver City, I’ve loved getting to know the amazing shops within Platform, as well as the surrounding areas. Grabbing a morning coffee at Bianca is a must. I love Destroyer for lunch dates. For an afternoon pick me up, I love to stop by the Culver City location of Formula Fig.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents. I have always admired my parents who took a big risk emigrating to Canada at the age of 40 with three young kids, leaving their jobs, families and community to start from scratch in a brand new country. It has only recently dawned on me how brave that was now that I am their age with young kids of my own. They definitely instilled in me a belief that anything is possible.
