We had the good fortune of connecting with Bee Gutierrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bee, how does your business help the community?
Between stand up comedy and producing events I have found that my favorite and most significant impact has been to help build commuinty within women in the comedy industries. Women are so powerful and such doers when it comes to pursuing their dreams and that intensifies the more women come together.
The biggest impact so far has been the monthly Brunch Bunch event at the Ice House Comedy Club in Pasadena CA.
Everyone involved over the past year has helped me grow this small brunch meet up into a full blown monthly event. ALL women in comedy are welcome; so we inclusively welcome (but are not limited too) comics, producers, content creators, casting agents, managers, actresses, artists, influencers, editors, sound engineers….literally any women in the comedy entertainment industries,
It makes an impact when women get together with no judgements or pressure. Everyone is welcome and is there for the same goal. Community, networking and building together shouldn’t always feel like work it should feel safe, inviting and productive!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My journey in stand up comedy started behind the lens of a camera. I have been a professional photographer for 20+ years now and shooting human beings in a authentic way came best to me when I was cracking jokes behind a camera lens. Lots of people over the years had told me to give stand up a try but i was much more comfortable behind the lens then behind a microphone.
I was going through a hard point in my life and was seeing a therapist who told me as a homework assignment to write everything down that I had always wanted to do but never actually did due to FEAR. Then she said start with the easiest one and go conquer it. SO I made the list and the first one was “HEIGHTS” so I went to a climbing gym and went up and down on the wall and felt extremely empowered. The second fear on my list was “Try Stand Up Comedy” so I found a local open mic in Van Nuys at a spot called Liquid Zoo and walked in and signed up with Ryan Talmo, who still to this day runs that mic, (( Shoutout Ryan Talmo )). He gave me like 10 minutes and I got up there and told like 3 minutes and got down. I decided that night I just wanted to do comedy every single night from then on and so I did. I found my passion for building community through comedy.
Do not let the fear take away new journeys, you might find a side trail that turns out to be something you are extremely passionate about.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Foodie spots I am obsessed with right now: WannaSmash Burger, Mr Taco, HOPE, Jays Reds Tacos, Salsa and Beer, Ebaes, Hatchet Hall and Night + Market and Prince St Pizza & Paulys Pizza in Upland
I’m big on vendor markets, food truck gathering events like the 626 market, record shop adventures, events like the NELA Art Walk, Beat Swap Meet. Black Market Flea, low rider shows and art events!
Favorite view point spots: Sunken City in San Pedro & the Point Dume Malibu Reserve
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
