We had the good fortune of connecting with Ben Ulrich and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ben, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
After I was offered a scholarship to study at the Los Angeles Performing Arts Conservatory, I was extremely excited to pursue this path and couldn’t wait to get to the United States. At the same time, I recall how bittersweet it felt, knowing that I would have to leave Germany for the unknown.

And, sure, I could have told myself that I could quit at any given time and go back, but I always knew there were high stakes involved and felt like this was the chance I had been waiting for, so I didn’t want to screw it up.

At that time, I wasn’t really familiar with LA and also didn’t know anyone in the city.
I am pretty sure my limited English didn’t make things much easier.

Still, I vividly remember the feeling I had the moment the airplane touched down at LAX. It was a mix of pure excitement and hopefulness, but also a grain of fear.
It was on me now, 19-years old with one bag of luggage filled with all my belongings and lots of space for my dreams, hopes and visions. I knew at that moment that I was doing exactly what I had always envisioned and hoped for.
The journey continues…!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Since starting acting at a young age in Germany, I’ve read books and watched videos about a lot of different techniques.
By coming to LA, I’ve been lucky enough to learn and, even at times, work with some of the people who created them, as well as many other people who are exceptional at what they do.

Therefore, to anyone who has the opportunity to come to LA to study the arts, even if just for a short period of time, I would highly recommend it. Seeing it yourself and really experiencing it is always the best, I would say.

Overall, my goal is to be an actor that people really can connect with, and who is able to convincingly tell the audience a story in a long-lasting, touching and also entertaining way!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, we would see all the typical LA tourist spots like the Hollywood sign, the Griffith Observatory, Walk of Fame and so on, just to cross them off the list.
Then, I would drive us through the Hollywood Hills, serpentining towards Malibu.

The Hollywood Hills would be a must-see because they showcase a beautiful view of the city with amazing houses.
I also would take us to one of my favorite secret spots called Jerome C. Daniel’s Overlook, which is a great view point. From there, you can easily drive to Santa Monica and then Malibu, where there are many great restaurants along the coastline.
Then, we would continue driving an hour north towards Santa Barbara, where I lived a good while myself. The nature is absolutely beautiful and a must see.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There have been plenty of people so far! One name that particularly comes to mind is Fabio Coletta, a casting manager at an acting workshop in Germany that I was enrolled in.
During the workshop, he saw talent in me and encouraged me to continue pursuing acting. His confidence motivated me. A year later, he reached out to me with an acting opportunity.
I was cast and this ended up being my debut cinema film.

When it comes to a specific book, I would definitely go with “The Alchemist“ by Paulo Coelho.
When I was still much younger, this was the first book that I ever bought myself.
It has impacted my belief system to a certain extent. It‘s a story of adventure and bravery following a young boy on his journey to find his treasure at the Egyptian pyramids after seeing it in a vision.
Along the way, he meets a variety of characters who help him understand his personal legend and reach his destiny.

I’ve since read many books, but this has been the one that continues to stick in my mind by far, and it feels very relatable.
