Meet Benjamin Tecson | husband & father, christian, & artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Benjamin Tecson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Benjamin, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Cut & Sown: this creative outlet enables me to educate others through my love for clothing, music, and photography/videography. the initial goal with Cut & Sown was to educate people on clothing, from brands to invest in and what to look for in these kinds of investments. it has since developed into a means for me to share my perspective of the world through photography and videography. this has allowed me to build bridges with other creators across California and even around the world. Cut & Sown currently is being re-branded to be used for my music, which are currently 2 singles that are out on all platforms and others that are currently being written and produced.
Marriage is Ministry Podcast: my wife and I felt led to share our birth story, which began with a miscarriage and eventually our second child being born in 2023. as we shot those episodes, we decided to start a podcast and release episodes that unpack topics that those in just about any season can relate to. our goal and prayer is to encourage those who come across our episodes with our real-lived experiences and the wisdom of God that has helped us navigate and endure the challenges of life and marriage.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
my art is ever-changing. some days it’s music, other days it’s photography, and a podcast lumped in between.
i believe what sets my art apart from others is that I am driven by a desire to create from a place of vulnerability and transparency; this is often based on what I am inspired by in the moment, which changes almost daily. i desire to create art that is a breath of fresh air for those who come across it because of the simple notion that I am trying to create art that is contrarian to what is “acceptable” or “trending” these days. my ultimate goal is to encourage those as I faithfully go against the grain in a manner that is authentic, honest, and glorifying to the Lord.
my roots as a classical pianist (having performed and competed from 7 to 20 years old) and worship leader (having served from 14 years old to this day) have brought me to this point in my professional career. the two contrasting worlds of music have refined my ability as a musician, opening doors for me to teach from both a classical and contemporary perspective. it has also been instrumental in my writing, which I resumed this year after taking a 2 year hiatus. it has also allowed for me to take on work at churches where i also managed social media pages, which is how i started photography and have since expanded to my podcast and freelance work.
my career as an artist has had its challenges. in fact, it has been everything but easy. but I wouldn’t change a thing. the challenges that have come up over the years as a result doing almost everything independently have pushed me as an artist to consider how I can expand my capacity and ability in whatever outlet I’m pouring into at the moment. but more importantly, how to be gracious with myself in the process of learning, un-learning, or even re-learning in some cases. the beauty about art is that it comes with a lifelong ebb and flow that provides countless opportunities to learn – that is if we are humble enough to accept those lessons.
i overcame those challenges not in my strength, but in the Lord’s. whenever I functioned in my understanding and strength, things either stagnated or didn’t progress. but when I leaned into the Lord’s strength and direction, there was always provision and blessing on the other side. as it relates to me as an artist today, my desire is to encourage others in their pursuits as I do my best to be a light of the Lord through my work – whether it’s through my music, photography, podcast, or even my love for clothing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
in short, anything involving coffee is a must when breaking bread! i imagine that we would likely work in a shoot or two depending on where we’re at and what work is on the table at that point. so give me and a friend some coffee, instruments, cameras, and a good location and we’re set.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this my bride, Miranda. I wouldn’t be where I am today as a christian, husband, father, and artist if it wasn’t for her endless support and desire to see me grow on all ends. her ability to push me with grace and care has been a huge tangible encouragement these past few years. the Lord knew exactly what I needed in support and accountability when I first met her, and it’s because of His faithfulness through my marriage to Miranda that has brought me to where I am in this season of life.
Miranda, thank you for supporting my crazy dreams and ambitions. I am grateful for you beyond words.
