We had the good fortune of connecting with Bensie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bensie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Pursuing a career in the arts and entertainment is a risk itself, especially in Los Angeles. in addition to a higher cost of living and a populated housing market, the music industry here (and everywhere) has become a strict numbers game. How many followers do you have on instagram? How often do you release music? What are your views on TikTok? Its very easy to dwell on how quickly the field changed but the internet isn’t going anywhere. Because of this I have to alter the parameters in which I can take chances. I personally don’t think I can take the same stylistic risks I did 2 years ago. Now it is time to focus on building a brand and recognizable sound. As much as I enjoy taking risks artistically, I have learned how to take more calculated risks. In this new era the most important thing an artist can do is be consistent.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career started by creating with friends I worked with in the restaurant industry. I have been involved in creative projects since moving to Los Angeles (production assistant on Carpool Karaoke, Drop the Mic, and Gordon Ramsay’s 24 hrs to hell and back) and applied what I observed into my own creative process and began making music. I called the artists I knew for help, recorded a song, and shot a music video. To this day I am so proud for taking that initiative and following my heart. Creating with the people I love made it much easier because I felt safer to express myself and my creative ideas. It makes for a fun process especially when you respect each other and work well together.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Id start the day with an early morning run/ walk thru the Venice canals and Marina del Rey. We’d get brunch at the Penthouse at the Huntley Hotel ] and admire tthe incredible views of Santa Monica and west LA. Then we’d stop at dreamscape at the Century city mall for a state of the art virtual reality experience. We’d head on over to el matador beach in Malibu and lay out for a few hours before returning to Onyx roof top bar at the Shangri La hotel in Santa Monica for breathtaking views of the sunset and Santa Monica pier. we’d get dinner at the rose in Venice, followed by drinks at the waterfront. Out of all the clubs and events in Los Angeles, the greatest things to enjoy here are in nature. Nowhere in the United States has better views, weather, and diversity so anything that offers all three is worth enjoying. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The reason I am here in Los Angeles is because of my family. all of my favorite childhood memories were made while visiting my cousins in Inglewood. A trip here meant Knott’s berry farm, universal studios, beach days, and eating the best food made by my aunt lois. She and many other family members went out of their way to make sure I had a memorable time here as a child. And it worked! there is nowhere else in the world id want to live. I thank them for staple memories of my childhood that are now personal landmarks and make this big city crazy city feel even more like home.
