We had the good fortune of connecting with Beny Pirzadeh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beny, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I was a kid I’ve always had an affinity towards art. It’s the one thing in the world that allows me to tap into my own deep emotions to reflect on the person I am becoming. Nowadays i’m making music full time as a Retro-Pop singer. And if my music/art can impact anyone is a positive way or move them in any capacity, then Ive done my job. I also very much enjoy the process of creating because i get to be free to explore any side of myself for the sake of the art. Plus it’s always fun to collaborate with other artists who I vibe with!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Originally, I come from Toronto, Canada. I grew up there and was able to build a foundation of different skills in multiple areas of art. Although, music has always been my main goal and focus. It wasn’t until I had decided to take on the biggest project of my life – making a short film. It opened so many new doors for me. Originally, it started out as an idea for a music video (at the time I just released my first album and wanted to promote it). After weeks of planning and brainstorming, the idea started forming and I realized that the project was going in the direction of a film. But I still wanted to maintain that element of music. Especially because I had even named the title of the film after one of my most popular songs from my album “Time Runner”. So I created the film as both music video & film where they seamlessly blend together to tell a bigger story. This project took 2 years of my life absolutely working non-stop almost every single day. I had to pull in favours from friends, put together a crew, write the story, etc. Essentially I had to wear multiple hats such as being a director, actor, musician, vfx artist and editor. After the film was completed I had put it through a few different film festivals and actually ended up winning an award! Throughout all this time, it was leading me closer and closer to LA. I had make connections to people here who would later go on to be some of my closest friends I’d now consider family. At that point I made the decision to move here fully and pursue my artistic career. Ever since, it’s allowed me to truly prosper. I’ve been able to make connections to many amazing talented artists or individuals ranging from both very established or to people just starting out. It’s put me in a position to be able to pursue my music career full time while maintaining connections to the film & music industry too. Right now, I’m hyper focused on my music career. That’s what feels the most natural to me. I’ve recently been playing back to back shows in LA (mainly around West Hollywood area). I also have a new album dropping soon. I genuinely think that it will establish me more and solidify me as an artist that creates nostalgic sounding pop music with retro elements to it. Not many artists are into making that style so I want to be one of the few who make it even more popular. I’m already seeing plenty of evidence these days of people vibing with these retro sounds and that the 80’s is coming back in a big way!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
At the moment, i’m based out of the Alhambra area. If a friend were to visit, i’d 100% show them around the city. It’s more known for the incredible food we have available. Mainly Asian dishes but there are so many amazing options and all of these food spots are genuinely delicious. I’d also introduce them to the local art scene as Alhambra is a bit of an untapped market for entertainment. I’m seeing many artists here getting more established in the industry and many of them are coming from Alhambra. I’d also take them to studio I work out of! It’s a bit of a lowkey spot that my friends and I are lucky to have as a content creation space. We regularly have local creatives coming through to visit or to collaborate.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout my close friend Josiah Yu & the rest of the DoYu fam for always supporting me and my art! I wouldn’t be where I am if I they weren’t part of my life. I will be eternally grateful for them! They are also very talented creatives in film & music and have become an important part of my life.
