We had the good fortune of connecting with Berlyn Komar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Berlyn, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Planted Marketing has evolved from a love of small businesses and helping others make their dreams a reality.

Before knowing anything about marketing, I was a photographer doing some content creation for a small business. They asked me if I could help with their Instagram, which then turned into influencer marketing, which then grew and grew as most roles do when working for a start-up. I quickly realized that I loved all of the different aspects of marketing and enjoyed getting to bring in a variety of creative outlets.

I took this newfound passion and spent a few years fully immersing myself in the marketing world and learning all that I could while doing a variety of random projects to build a portfolio. I couldn’t narrow it down to one specific aspect that I liked the most but knew I never wanted to stray from helping people build their passion projects. Because of this, I decided to be a resource for small businesses that can’t afford a team but still need full-service agency work. I went full-time freelance in November of 2020 and was quickly able to grow my team with other dedicated creatives who understand my goals and our client’s visions.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve always struggled with finding interests and trying to decide on a career. I’ve tested out a million different options but I either wasn’t interested or didn’t feel like it satisfied the part of me that wants to give back and make a difference. I’ve always been very creative and was thrilled that this kind of just fell into place. I feel so lucky for the opportunity to be creative, have a flexible job, and be able to choose clients that are passionate and kind. I work with brands who make a difference with their product and/or give back to the community and it’s awesome to be able to be selective and make our little slice of the world slightly better!

Before taking the leap to go full-time freelance, there was definitely a lot of learning and a lot of sacrificing. When I knew I was on the right track, I was working a lot of part-time jobs and barely making it by. I knew taking a full-time job would kill the drive to keep pushing towards my goal, even when I wasn’t totally sure what the goal was! Each project taught me something new and I was sure that eventually, it would all lead me to where I needed to be.

I’m really excited about the future of Planted Marketing. I have a lot of things in the works that will help connect different people in the industry and bring light to small businesses. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow an amazing team and can’t wait to see how it all comes together.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If we had a week, I would do a whole coast tour! Starting with electric bikes in Venice, vintage shopping in Long Beach at Goods on Orange, Balboa exploring in Newport Beach.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My boyfriend has been my biggest supporter, photography teacher, and even assistant throughout this entire journey. He’s spent hours helping me get the perfect shot, has been my 2nd shooter at events, and has been my biggest cheerleader each time I say “I got a new client!”
