We had the good fortune of connecting with Bet Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bet, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My whole life I have played it safe, most likely from a fear of failure. If you keep risk low then your chances of being disappointed are greatly decreased. But as I age and grow I understand how debilitating fear can be to accomplishing something you truly love. I could see what I wanted and could envision myself there but kept making excuses to not taking any risk. Until one day it all just clicked. Someone casually said the clique term “life is too short” and I suddenly realized that it’s true! I no longer wanted to live in the shadow of regret and fear. And ever since that day, the risk of starting a business has been immensely rewarding.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started Pulse Barre CT in October 2020 when the world was just starting to come out of quarantine. I had been teaching only virtually during the pandemic but was offered an opportunity to use a friends dance studio to start my own classes. It took a little while for some people to get comfortable with being back in the studio but eventually class sizes started to really grow. In October 2021, I moved into my own studio that my husband and I built out ourselves to be able to offer more classes. The whole process has been relatively easy and absolutely fun! Once I decided to launch my own company and brand I’ve had one door open after the other just affirming my decision.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We are located in Canton, CT which would not be considered a city. It is very rural where we are but certainly not lacking for things to do. After taking a morning barre class at Pulse Barre CT, we could grab a coffee and breakfast directly next door at Little Oak Cafe. During the day there are some beautiful, scenic hikes in the area or head into Hartford, CT to check out the Wadsworth Atheneum art museum. Infinity Music in the evening for a concert or the Bushnell for a show.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many to thank and recognize! My loyal barre students who are also my friends are responsible for planting the seeds of encouragement. They continue to support me by coming to classes, spreading the word and being my cheerleaders. My husband who is absolutely my rock and sounding board. He has always seen the potential in me to be something great and I am extremely grateful to him. I am overall thankful to everyone in my life’s history because without them and the experiences, good and bad, I would not be who I am today.
