Meet Beth Bowman | Ceramic Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Beth Bowman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beth, what is the most important factor behind your success?
As a potter, and an artist, I keep my options and work flow very open. Whether I’m making a custom piece, or a production line of items, I keep my options open. I love to teach people how to throw on the wheel and instruct hand building pottery as well. By being able to be flexible, my revenue is able to flow from one season to the next.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I began to work with clay and understand how to move and manipulate it, I was hooked. I love that by simply adjusting the weight or silhouette, each piece can evoke a different feeling or aesthetic. Additionally it’s such a wonderful medium that allows to focus and let go at the same time. It’s completely immersive and messy, which is a wonderful metaphor for life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had some friends visiting me in Long Beach I would show them all of the local spots. We can take a picnic down to the Colorado Lagoon, or the bluff to people watch. Take them to some incredible , restaurants like Panxa, Alder and Sage or Ubuntu. Or coffee shops like Coffee Drunk or Goodtime. Long Beach is filled with little gems of sunshine and locally owned small businesses. We could shop for plants at Vida or Plantiitas, or shop vintage on 4th Street. And lastly, spend some time making pottery together at my home studio.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My good friend and floral artist, Inessa Nichols
