We had the good fortune of connecting with Beti and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Beti, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I believe I always knew that I wanted to pursue an artistic career. As far back as I can remember I always had a love for music. There is a video of me in kindergarten where someone asks me what I want to be when I grow up and my response was singer, dancer, and doctor. Kids are always extremely ambitious, but to have known at the age of 4/5 that I wanted to be a singer is insane to me. As I got older singing became a form of expression and release. I feel fortunate to have the ability to make my passion and form of expression a career.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As someone who is trying to pursue being an artist full time, there is so much that keeps me busy. Being an artist is a lot more than just making music. I am constantly trying to think of what’s next. I have recently been performing at local shows, had a photo shoot for some merch I’m planning on dropping soon, working on a music video, and of course new music. I’m doing all these things while still working another job in order to fund everything I want to accomplish musically. Having to balance everything gets exhausting. There are many late nights, moments of uncertainty, doubts, and insecurity but I just try to always remind myself that I am capable of attaining my goals. I am also blessed to have such an encouraging and honest support system and a team that believes in me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bestie were coming to town I would definitely have something different planned for each night. I love activities and excursions!! If it were summer time and we had endless disposable income, some places I would want to go would be some restaurants that offer multiple course menu options with a wine pairing like some Jose Andres restaurants offer. I would also go to Toscana Market for a cooking class, maybe do a water activity (paddle boarding, canoeing, etc.), attend a comedy show, lounge at a rooftop pool somewhere, bar hop on 14th st. or H st in DC, have a picnic on the National Mall, visit some museums, and definitely squeeze in some nights in the house to just hang out and watch movies. I know I listed a bunch of things, but the DMV has so much to offer and experience!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

First, I have to shout out God. I am truly blessed.

Next, I would have to shout out to my parents. They came to America from Eritrea as refugees and have worked extremely hard to provide me with the life that I currently have.

My older brother deserves a huge shout out because he is the one who supports and believes in me the most and always shows up for me.

The biggest of shoutouts goes to Kilasi who produced my entire project “902.” He reached out to me and got me into the studio to start working on original music, so everything I’ve accomplished so far is all because of him.

Lastly, shoutout to PGN. A collective of artists from PG County, MD who have been extremely supportive have helped me maneuver everything behind the scenes.
