We had the good fortune of connecting with Bettina Lobo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bettina, how do you think about risk?
Well, as I grow older I´ve realized time and time again that taking risks is the only way I can grow. I took a risk when I first moved to the United States to go and study in NYC when I was 18, I took a risk when I had my first audition and I was incredibly nervous but I did it, I took a risk when I moved to a small town in Colorado to do theatre for 3 months because it was my first professional job after college, I took a risk when I decided to pursue musical theatre because it´s my life passion (even though I know how hard it is to “make it” in this career. Risks. Risks. Risks. If I hadn´t taken those risks and played it safe, then I would probably still be living in Venezuela wondering what my life could´ve been if I had been to afraid to follow my dreams. And you know what? Sometimes risks pay off and sometimes they don´t, but the good thing is that I´m hardly ever left with a “what if” on my mind because at least I tried.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I do Musical Theatre. That is my love and what I´m determined to do for the rest of my life. I also love straight acting, writing and creating content online which is a new passion of mine that keeps my creative mind in constant movement. I´m from Venezuela and no, it hasn´t been easy at all because there are many factors that come to play when you are an imigrant trying to join a market that limits what an artist can do just because of where they were born.
Having said this, it all comes down to taking risks and believing in yourself to make things happen for you. I heard of these stories of actors trying out for years and getting nowhere but I´ve also heard about the ones who never gave up and eventually succeeded. I hold on to the latter one and it´s what I´try to spread every time a new actor, specially an international one, asks me how it´s like. My answer: you have to work extra harder than everybody else and don´t give up, it can take 99 “no´s” to get your first “yes”.
I always like to tell them. I am Latina, a musical theatre nerd who plans on becoming the first Disney Princess to voice the princess in both English and Spanish (and believe it or not I´m proud to say that I´m getting closer to that goal). See? DREAM. BIG. and if I can inspire someone to dream, then let that be my brand.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents. After almost 5 years we lived under the same roof again (due to COVID) and they were the ones who had to listen to me for endless hours recording content, belting my lungs out for 35 takes, then skipping dinner because I had to edit, them always lowering the volume of the TV so you couldn´t hear those sounds on my videos, and so many things that motivated me to stay creative during this difficult time for artists who have nowhere to share their art – unless, like I discovered, doing it online.
