We had the good fortune of connecting with Betty Ke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Betty, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Where are you from and how did your background and upbringing impact who you are today?
Growing up in Taiwan, music has always been a significant part of my life. My journey with music began early, as I immersed myself in percussion for over 13 years. Initially, I aspired to perform classical music on grand stages, but life had different plans. Instead, I found myself studying an Applied Language program, temporarily putting my musical ambitions on hold.
However, fate intervened when a friend introduced me to a Production Music program led by Real Huang, a renowned musician from the famous Taiwanese band F.I.R. This discovery was a turning point, revealing a pathway in the music industry dedicated to pop music. It was an eye-opener, and I realized I didn’t have to give up my passion for music. This realization reignited my motivation, leading me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Applied Music from Tainan National University of Arts.
The supportive environment in this program was instrumental in my growth, providing me with the opportunities and courage to organize music events, produce my own album, and even tour with live shows. Eager to learn from industry professionals, I actively sought out workshops and mentorship. I was fortunate to find a mentor, Wu I-Wei from L2R Music Creation Studio. Wu I-Wei is a prolific songwriter who has worked with many famous artists like Eric Chou, Angela Chang, and Rainie Yang. His guidance was crucial in shaping my musical journey, helping me develop as a songwriter and an independent artist.
This journey eventually led me to the Musicians Institute College of Contemporary Music in Los Angeles, USA, where I continue to grow and learn. The opportunities I’ve had, such as having an interview with Shoutout LA, are incredibly exciting. Embracing each chance that comes my way, I follow the path that destiny lays out for me, always striving to give my best. Music is not just a passion but an integral part of my life, and I am committed to exploring new opportunities and seeing where this journey takes me next.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artistic journey began with the release of my first single, “Annoying Love,” in 2018. This song marked my debut as an arranger and producer. It was a challenging experience because I had never arranged music before and lacked formal music knowledge. I relied heavily on my ear to determine if something sounded good, often joking that I didn’t know the key or chords of my own song.
I owe a great deal to my friend Mo, Yu-Ting, a pianist who brought this song to life. Her beautiful ideas allowed me to add strings and drums, elevating the song to a new level. Her support was invaluable and taught me the importance of collaboration.
Following this experience, I dedicated myself to learning music theory and arrangement. I took numerous classes and spent years improving my knowledge and skills. Despite my struggles with theory, I persisted, understanding that being an independent artist means wearing many hats. I had to learn everything from songwriting and producing to marketing, publishing, and organizing live shows. This journey taught me humility and the importance of learning from everyone I work with. I am incredibly grateful to all my partners who have supported me and helped make my music great.
Growing up in Taiwan, I faced cultural and environmental challenges that made it difficult to build confidence. After several years of making music, I realized that I lacked confidence, which was an unhealthy mindset that continued to grow. The COVID-19 pandemic provided a moment of reflection. It paused the world and my life, allowing me to face my issues and decide to be brave. I came to the USA to improve my skills and build my confidence and healthy mindset. From the moment I arrived, I knew it was the right choice. I fell in love with the positive culture here, which has helped me become a better version of myself.
I firmly believe that a person’s character is reflected in their music. If you listen to my songs, you’ll notice an attempt to balance positivity and the feeling of being lost. I think it’s important to experience and embrace being lost as part of life. Through my music, I aim to share love and support, letting listeners know they are not alone. My goal is to continue making music that resonates with people, offering strength and encouragement to be true to themselves.
I want the world to know that my journey has been one of persistence, collaboration, and self-discovery. My music is a reflection of my experiences and emotions, and I hope it can become a meaningful part of others’ lives, providing support and encouragement.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d start with a brief exploration of Hollywood. We’d visit iconic spots like the Hollywood Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theatre, and the Hollywood Sign. We’d also catch a live show at the Hollywood Bowl or a concert at the Troubadour to get a taste of the city’s vibrant entertainment scene. One of the highlights would definitely be a meal at Yazawa Japanese BBQ, where we’d savor the best BBQ I’ve ever had in my life. And we couldn’t miss trying the Tiramisu Milk Tea from TAN-CHA, a flavor we don’t have in Taiwan that has become my number one milk tea choice.
After soaking in the city vibes, I’d take them to my favorite getaway, Mammoth Lakes. This town feels like it’s outside of this world, where all pressures and annoying thoughts just disappear. In winter, we’d ski or snowboard on the stunning slopes of Mammoth Mountain, surrounded by breathtaking snowy landscapes. In summer, we’d hike, go sup on Lake Sabrina, and enjoy a picnic by the lake. We’d also relax in the natural hot springs, soaking in the warm waters and the peaceful surroundings. Mammoth Lakes is a place that captures the essence of natural beauty and adventure, and I’d want my best friend to experience the magic and tranquility it offers.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I dedicate my shoutout to my parents. Their open-mindedness and unwavering support have been invaluable. They trusted me to make my own decisions, allowing me to pursue my passions and carve my own path. Their belief in me has been a constant source of strength and motivation.
Beyond my family, I am deeply grateful to all the people I have met along the way. This includes friends who have encouraged and stood by me, even those who may have caused me pain. I believe that every interaction, whether positive or negative, shapes us into who we are today. These experiences have taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of perseverance.
I want to recognize myself for having the courage to pursue what I love, even in the face of potential failure or hurt. Each step, each decision, has brought me to where I am today, and I am proud of the journey.
In summary, my journey has been a collective effort, and I am deeply thankful to everyone who has been part of it. Their support, mentorship, love, and even the challenges have all played a crucial role in my story.
