We had the good fortune of connecting with Bibi Quiles (DJ Keelez) and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bibi, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe the most important factor behind the success of my brand is my authenticity. As a female, LGBTQ+, Puerto Rican DJ, I struggled with this for a while because I did not know the best way to market myself without potentially alienating clients. I wasn’t sure how I would be received once I let my clients know about the real me so it took a while to fully embrace everything that truly made me, me. However to my surprise, the moment I began to unapologetically present myself to the world, my business thrived in ways I would have never imagined. I have now been in business over a decade and am one of the top female DJ’s in the Los Angeles area!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are a woman-owned Los Angeles based DJ company that specializes in high-energy, fun, unique weddings, parties, corporate functions and virtual events. We are diversity and inclusion experts who proudly serve LGBTQ+ as well as multicultural weddings and events. We have been in business over 10 years and have done over 1000+ events. What started off as a one person show has grown into a multi DJ operation that continues to grow daily. As a female in a male dominated industry, it wasn’t easy to get to where I am today. I had to really prove myself in the industry before I was able to get any sort of “street cred”. It took a lot of literal blood, sweat and tears but I wouldn’t change my journey for anything. It has really molded me into a better business owner and DJ.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is tough because there are so many amazing things to do in and around Los Angeles! But if I had to narrow it down, I would start with a trip to the Hollywood sign and the Griffith Observatory. Then I would take them down to Hollywood for a stroll down the Walk of Fame with a possible detour at Madam Tussauds if there was enough time. After that I would take them to an amazing sushi dinner at SUGARFISH. The next day we would hit up the beach and then the following days would be Palm Springs topped off with a trip to the mountains to see some snow before heading back to the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout my associate DJ’s, web designer/social media team and subcontractors for always working hard to ensure we are providing the best possible service. They are truly rockstars and I am forever grateful for everything they do!
