Meet BICHA | Songwriter, Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with BICHA and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi BICHA, how does your business help the community?
To me, music can change the world.
Music has always been my closest friend in rough, lonely, sad, happy, and euphoric times. I write songs about personal experiences and social issues such as sexism, body image, equality, lack of equality, etc.
My solo music project BICHA was created because of my need of expression and my lack of understanding of the world around me. (Bicha means creature in Spanish) I gave myself that name because everyone feels misunderstood, everyone feels like a freak at some point.
I believe that BICHA represents raw emotions and freedom within expression; aligning with the LGBTQ+ community, Latin community, and Equal Rights.
They expect girls to sit pretty and silent; while that wouldn’t be the case with me at all. The world needs new ideals of femininity and everyday we’re getting more and more versions of that (which I love, I didn’t have that when I was younger).
I mean come on, im just a chick from Argentina trying to make a career out of my passion out here in LA!!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Im Carla, I was born in Mendoza, Argentina and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music about 2 years ago.
I write songs under the name of BICHA, which means creature in Spanish. I would say my Kurt Cobain-like spirit is always dancing with my Madonna side, also mixing English and Spanish together in my songs.
Im currently in the process of putting out my first EP in English that I wrote during my first year in Los Angeles. It’s a 5 song EP called L.A Tapes, and it’s probably my rawest yet most fun work I’ve done so far – it’s my love/hate letter to this insane city. I called up my producer Javier Cruces, my band and all of my friends; I booked the studio for a weekend and bought tons of beer and we ended up live recording all of the songs. It is a live EP, we were all in the same room being chaotic and having fun.
BICHA is an alternative project that was born because of my urgent need to express myself and trying to understand the world around me. In my songs I tackle social/political issues, mental health issues, and personal experiences. Im just a girl from Argentina trying to build a community made out of insane, strange, underdogs, queers, non queers, whatever-the-fuck-u-wanna-be humans.
Coming to LA as a Latin woman wasn’t easy, Im still looking for a community that’d dig some pop/rock/post-grunge/bilingual indie music around here. Not that I like labels, but you get the point. I released my Debut EP No Quiero Pensar Mas in 2022 (produced by Andrés Ceccarelli) and the songs Cables and the title track got into several Spotify Editorial Playlists such as Indie Argentina and EQUAL Argentina.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start off the day with some coffee at Jones Coffee Roasters; then Id go to the Melrose Flea Market and thrift some goodies. I would explore Silverlake area, drive around and stuff; maybe get a burger at The Win-dow. Id grab a beer at Hermosillo in Highland Park and Id go watch a show!!!!
You can go to The Smell for some punk rock, The Goldfish if you want that retro vibe, or Zebulon – where there’s always good bands and a nice patio to have a smoke and meet people.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes!!!
I wanna give a huge shoutout to my mentor Marko DeSantis for being a great guidance and for encouraging me to record my upcoming EP L.A Tapes; of he wouldn’t have insisted on me doing it. I probably would’ve never done it!!!
Also I want to thank the incredibly talented Jameel Roberts, who also has guided me through my songwriting journey for a couple of years and has been a tremendous influence on me.
