We had the good fortune of connecting with Bitool Tora and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bitool, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
The great Cuban artist Micah Carpentier has always been a major influence in my life. His Complete Letters, published posthumously by Connerie Press in 1999 has a privileged place on my nightstand. I regularly open it up at random and I always find something inspiring. Last week I stumbled on this gem from a letter to his mistress Gallimard Cyrus: “Cuanto más haces clic en los anuncios, más dinero ganan los empresarios parásitos que alimentan el fondo viscoso.”
Isn’t that beautiful?
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
When the business model of online content began to take form, I realized that I could make a lot of money by harvesting eyeballs with unpaid prose and pictures and sell advertising to companies who exercise little or no oversight over where their ad dollars are going to. It’s pretty brilliant though not terribly ethical (but then again, capitalism isn’t a girl scout troop). This kind of passive income has subsidized my lifestyle and allows me to have a wonderful pet store without worrying too much about selling animals..
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living is Los Angeles is great because there is so much variety, so many choices, and so many opportunities to spend money. I always take my guests to Hashem’s House of Scripture. It’s a great relaxing venue for all types of shows and exhibitions. It’s right across the street from Talmudtora, the Korean barbecue that was featured in Sofia Lagrimar’s film Roku. They have the best kimchi in town.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m inspired by many types of people. Politicians, poets, pedagogues, golfers, geologists, engineers, but most of all artists. Believe it or not, there is someone who walks the earth who is a politician/poet/pedagogue/golfer/geologist/ engineer, AND an amazing painter all rolled into one. I’d like to give this genius a hearty ‘shout-out.’
