We had the good fortune of connecting with Blake Brown & Anziz Az and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Blake & Anziz, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We started The Embassy very organically. We were referred to each other by mutual friends and decided to have a studio session to see if we were able to work together. We very quickly bonded and realized our skillsets complimented each other perfectly. We also had a very similar outlook on the fact that the studio should be an enjoyable, safe space, free of ego, so from there The Embassy was born.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think one of the main things that sets our art apart from others is a combination of our heritage and our lack of fear to explore the possibilities of combining them. With Anziz being from Benin, Blake being from Australia and then living and coming together in America, it was able to provide us with a big range of inspirations and background knowledge to draw upon. Then being able to take the range of what we have and put them together has really helped us to create our own unique style and sound. This wasn’t easy at first because a lot of people like to stay in their comfort zone and we were guilty of that early on as well, it just took some courage and positive feedback to give us the confidence to start really doing our own thing. Once we did get over that hump though, we have been much happier and prouder with what we’re putting out in the world, because it defines us!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anything they wouldn’t be able to do at home! Coming to a new city is all about exploring new things. We’d have to show them the Californian beaches, golf courses, anything that shows off the beautiful weather we have here. We would obviously have to bring them in to hang out at the studio and see a session, I feel like that is always a fun and unique experience for someone who may not be in a creative field.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Every friend and family member that has listened to our music, watched our videos and pushed our releases. The positive feedback and support has been overwhelming in the best way. Also all our fellow artists and producers that we have collaborated with that have shown up with a positive attitude always. Those are the people that keep us going and make us proud to be doing what we’re doing.
