We had the good fortune of connecting with Bochun Cheng and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bochun, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Integrity and honesty.

In Chinese, we often hear that business cannot thrive without deceit, giving the impression that being cunning and calculating is a necessity for entrepreneurs. However, due to my family background, I have witnessed my father, a businessman, gradually expanding his company solely through integrity. Observing this has strengthened my belief that honesty and integrity can build lasting relationships with customers and friends.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I established Baesthetic Media Company, I initially expected that my employees would be capable of executing various types of shoots, just like me. Of course, aside from wanting everyone to be elite and provide high-quality services like me, I also hoped that as they developed individually, they would be able to stand on their own.

Originally, I thought that for a media company, it was sufficient to impart technical skills. However, I realized I was wrong, as there are many facets to consider in the establishment of a company.

In the process of starting a business and training employees, mistakes in execution are inevitable. How to coordinate and handle these situations is crucial. Honestly, even in my current position, I cannot guarantee with 100% certainty that mistakes won’t occur, especially in the subjective realm of visual arts.

When employees make mistakes, it is essential to impose appropriate consequences for individual cases and find ways to fulfill and satisfy customer needs. In such situations, most companies incur losses. Of course, I won’t blindly cater to customers. If there are no issues with employee execution, even if it means losing a customer, I will choose to stand by my employees.

Another common challenge is dealing with customer budgets and company costs. Like many small-scale entrepreneurs, initially, I used my extra time to control costs. I strive to meet customer budget demands while also wanting to reward employees for their efforts and hard work.

Operating the company for almost a year, my biggest takeaway is learning how to understand and manage people. Now, the company is gradually stabilizing and everyone is becoming more accustomed to their roles. Most of my time is currently spent developing potential collaborations with promising companies and integrating resources. There are quite a few future development plans in preparation.

I am very excited about the development of Baesthetic Media Company next year.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I will take them to the Lower East Side, which is one of the most popular neighborhoods in New York City.

New popup stores open every week, featuring showrooms, fashion events, etc. There are also numerous galleries, cool bars, and vintage stores.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout to my master school, Pratt Institute

During my time at Pratt, my perspective on art underwent significant changes. It challenged my previous understanding of what art is, revealing that it extends beyond the visual realm and serves as an expression of concepts and ideas. Many presentations that may appear commercial at first glance actually carry deeper artistic meanings. This experience has become a guiding light in my subsequent creative development.
