We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon White and Meredith Meyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandon & Meredith, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Brandon: My earliest memories are of creating songs, drawings, stories, anything. I think most musicians are lucky in that they don’t find music so much, as music finds them. With that, I feel like I have to do it. Pursuing music as a creative career gave me a path in life, and it’s a great thrill to get to still follow that path. On the journey, you meet other musicians/ artists and I think that’s part of the fun of getting to do this- making friends with people on your wavelength.

Meredith: I started singing and playing piano from a young age. I would spend hours making up songs and dances in my backyard, and that was just how I passed the time. As I got older and was trying to figure out what I was doing with my life, music was my one constant. I don’t know if I thought about music as a career, as much as I just thought about wanting to keep creating it. I enjoy collaboration with other people as much as I enjoy making it by myself, and that led to jobs singing and playing on other people’s projects. I’ve had many different side jobs in my lifetime, but none of them felt as natural for me as making music.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Brandon: Ironically, there were times when Easy Dreams wasn’t always easy! I think that’s something everyone can relate to. So many times it was just a matter of really wanting to keep on keeping on, in spite of life’s setbacks. I think what makes us unique as artists is that we grew up schooled in a specific type of country harmonies, but we tie that to more experimental and future-facing sounds. We both grew up loving the Cocteau Twins as much as Randy Travis, and through discovery and experimentation, have found our own little way of bridging the gap between these wildly contrasting sounds. If there’s any lesson I’ve learned over and over, it’s that showing up on time, paying attention, and being there to help is just as important as all the talent in the world.

Meredith: I’m excited that with this ever-changing world, music is an art form that also never stays the same. While people might have certain styles or put their own signature stamp on the way they play, the fact that music naturally evolves creates a necessity to keep growing, keep learning, and keep trying new things. Because of this, I never get bored when writing something new. As far as challenges go, there are always going to be things in life completely outside of your control. It’s not about avoiding or ignoring the hard things, as much as it is about how you respond to them. The important thing is no matter what unexpected storms come your way, that you remind yourself of the reasons you’re wanting to create in the first place, and you brush yourself off and show up to the page, the canvas, whatever it is that you started. If that’s what brings you life, that’s what you have to do for yourself.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
LA has so much history and so many hidden gems, there are so many options! Where do we start? Having breakfast at Home State tacos would be a great way to start the day! Next we’d recommend walking off those breakfast tacos at the Hollywood Reservoir, a little oasis that gives you the best of both worlds with its nature and view of the city on the other side of the bridge (and isn’t too stenuous). After that, maybe a sunset cocktail at a historic hotel like the Hollywood Roosevelt or the Chateau Marmont. For nightlife, you’ve got your pic of talented comedians at Dynasty Typewriter or Largo at the Coronet. Or you could go dancing at Boardner’s, or catch a band at Permanent Records. And for a post-outing meal, you can’t beat a cup of Apffels coffee and a piece of pie at Norm’s Restaurant.

If you’re aiming for a day trip out of the middle of the city, a short drive to Descanso Gardens is lovely and conveniently has a cafe there too that serves lunch. You could go further up the Angeles Crest Highway for some impressive views and a steeper hike among the pine trees. If the beach is your thing, Manhattan Beach is really user friendly and accessible too, with its extended wide sidewalk paths, and many shops and restaurants along the way. And if you’re into finding some fresh fruit in season, you just have to drive along the 118 freeway in the north part of the San Fernando valley and look for the many orchard and farm stand signs. After all, you can’t come to California without partaking in some of the best fruits and veggies in the country!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our band Easy Dreams recently released our debut full length album, Sunformer. Our producer, Adam Lasus, was instrumental in setting the tone for our sessions to be a magical, cool and exciting recording experience. Because he has so much enthusiasm for experimenting musically and creating your own original sound, we felt free to try out so many wild things that none of us had ever done before. In that process of experimentation, we felt like we found the heart of the songs. There’s such a sense of joy in the album and so much of that is Adam Lasus. With his studio in North Hollywood, called Studio Red, he’s created the perfect alternate universe away from the busyness of LA and beyond.
