Meet Brandon Spring

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Spring and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I think all creatives probably feel tempted to give up at some point. When things don’t go as expected, especially when you’ve worked hard and tried to have your ducks in a row, you start to question things. And it gets easy to compare and wonder if you’re on the right path. I’ve felt that. What’s kept me going as a creative is learning that my life and trajectory are my own; everyone has their path and the one I’m on is unique to me. Also, I don’t think I’ll ever give up as long as I’m breathing because I don’t plan on stopping pursuing art and filmmaking; I’m a lifelong student. It’s my vocation, my calling. That vocation has taken different forms across different industries, but I think when you live out your craft in whatever sphere you find yourself you’re already successful. The pinnacle isn’t reached as long as you are constantly learning more. One of my heroes is Ridley Scott who’s in his mid-80s and still putting work out. How could I give up when I have someone like that as an example?

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
How I got to where I am today is a story that spans the last decade and 3,000 miles across the country. In short, I originally went to school in Ohio for architecture, which I still enjoy as an art form, but I didn’t have the same desire for it that I had with film. In my freshman year of college, I chatted with a staff member on campus about my future. She said she saw fire in my eyes when I talked about movies and something sparked in me when I left her office. Something came alive and I felt a new sense of purpose. I took a risk and dropped out to pursue education in film school. It was a challenge for a couple of years though; I knew what I wanted to do, just not how to get there. But I practiced being behind the camera while living in Cleveland, and eventually, I made the move to SoCal and finished my education in film school.
Since then, I’ve created a variety of short films and tons of video content across many different industries. I’m developing my next short film to shoot in early 2025, along with a feature script, and to this day, none of it has been easy. But I’ve discovered that you do get better. I’m all about being a lifelong learner of my craft and vocation. So it doesn’t stop once I get a dream job or a successful film project. Your calling keeps on going; keeps on evolving.
I want the world to know me as an artist and a storyteller, that I told stories and created visuals on the screen that are compelling and thought-provoking. It’s important to me that audiences and viewers have something to reflect on not just while they watch my work, but afterward as well.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I was showing my best friend around the area, I’d probably take them between LA and OC. The first spot we’d go to is one of my favorite restaurants in Costa Mesa called “Toast Kitchen and Bakery”. The Nashville chicken and waffles are the best I’ve ever had, so we’d order that for sure. Then I’d probably take them further south to check out Newport, Balboa Island, and Huntington Beach to get a taste of the coastal life. In LA, there are so many places to see, so we’d hit up some of the museums and restaurants. Seeing The Grove is a wild experience too (I grew up in the Midwest, so outdoor malls weren’t a thing!). And we’d have to spend at least one day to drive down San Diego. I love visiting North Park, especially a whiskey bar called “Seven Grand”. And honestly, just meandering around these cities is a fun activity in itself.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate this to all of the people who’ve poured encouragement, support, and mentorship into me over the past decade. My parents who helped me go from Cleveland to California and my professors at Biola University truly deserve the credit for shaping me into the person I am.
