We had the good fortune of connecting with Breeze Hu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Breeze, why did you pursue a creative career?
I stumbled into my career in the arts purely by chance. As a child, I enjoyed comics and animations like any other kid, thus I began to draw by tracing the characters from it.

However, it wasn’t until I fell seriously ill that I realized how much drawing meant to me and how important it was in my life. With the support of my family, I enrolled in an art school to pursue my passion. Ever since then, I’ve been working in the arts and creative fields.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an artist who’s focused on storytelling, which is why I chose comics and graphic novels as my art form. I believe that stories do more than just provide emotional experiences – good stories can also influence our world. They can heal, educate, and bring people together. Currently, I’m focusing on telling stories about urban loneliness, family relationships, and how to face trauma.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atomic Comics is my absolute favorite spot in Baltimore! As a comic artist who loves indie comics and manga, I always find something inspiring there. The staff is super friendly and always ready to offer recommendations. I heard the shop regularly hosts events for independent creators, too.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my cohorts from the MICA ILP program. They are a group of talented artists from all over the world. We inspire and support each other, and after two years of studying for our MFA, I wanted to give them a shoutout.
