We had the good fortune of connecting with Brendan Duffey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brendan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Working for others in the recording industry provided me with valuable insights and experience, but over time, I began to feel a strong desire to invest in something that I could truly call my own. One key aspect was recognizing that my skills and dedication were contributing significantly to the success of the studios and producers I worked for. It became apparent that I needed to grow my own career and business, and create a situation in which I would get the recognition, money and growth I deserved. I witnessed firsthand how my contributions positively impacted other businesses, and wanted to redirect that energy into building my own success story. I needed to build a legacy for myself in music and business. Starting my own recording facility was a strategic move to align my professional goals with my personal aspirations. I knew building a reputation and gaining trust in the industry would take time, but persistence would pay off. Almost 20 years after opening my first recording facility I have come farther than I ever thought possible. I just built a new private studio for myself and plan to continue doing what I have done for almost 30 years.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work in recording and music may set me apart from the market; more importantly, it connects me with people who share common tastes and objectives. Recently, I worked with Roy Z and Bruce Dickinson on Bruce Dickinson’s new album, “The Mandrake Project.” Getting to work with the singer from my favorite band and one of my favorite producers was a dream come true through years of hard work towards precisely this. I am most proud of sticking it out through high and low with the help of my wife, Ana. The biggest lesson I have learned is that “Long-term agile iteration gives you access to opportunities,” or in short, volume negates luck. I am obsessed with music, audio and creating art with innovative artists and technicians.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot is my house. I am of the mind that you should create a life and an environment that you don’t need to leave to enjoy your life. The best LA has to offer is in the art and culture that happens in the markets and venues. The best thing about a big city is going out and exploring new things….. that being said my preference is to stay in the home I love.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Almost two years ago, I became the Senior Atmos Mastering Engineer for Million Dollar Snare. The owner and Chief mastering engineer, Nicolas de Porcel (Dep) is a consummate professional, innovator, and engine of encouragement. The team (Ryan, Demetrius & Kayla) work in the calmest high-performance environment I have ever experienced. No matter the size of the project, Dep is always involved in ensuring his standard, which equates to pushing everyone’s limits and results in the numbers, accolades, feedback, and music that makes us do what we do. Working with incredible people makes our lives, profession, and performance better. Thank you Dep and team!
