We had the good fortune of connecting with Bria Amira and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bria, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
As cheesy as it is to say, I would say the artistic and creative career chose me. I have had many dreams and aspirations throughout my life. Starting from the age of five, I was inspired by the popular kid show “Dora The Explorer” to learn Spanish. Another example, I knew I loved animals, so I wanted to become a veterinarian. Although learning Spanish and becoming a veterinarian are great career choices, I have always been interested in creative topics. Fashion, music, and beauty have kept me fascinated from day one. I believe discovering my passions from such a young age drove me to pursue a creative/artistic career even if I didn’t completely comprehend how to begin. When I was ten years old, I would take my mom’s HP laptop and record myself singing or doing my makeup. I loved singing “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys which is one of my favorites. I still sing it all the time. In preschool, you could always catch me playing dress-up, trying on heels, and wearing fun-colored boas. I found so much joy in exploring my creativity. At that age, I did not understand that it could be a possible career. I was just a kid having fun. Fast forward to high school, I continued my artistic and creative dream by signing up for photography, choir, and creative writing classes. I was always intrigued by these electives. It allowed me to showcase my creative side. My creative aspirations continued into college while studying psychology. No matter what I have gone through in my life, creativity has never left me. I chose to pursue an artist/creative career because it has always been in my heart, and I want to share my love for it with others.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Music, fashion, and beauty is my brand. Every moment I write new lyrics or purchase new clothing pieces to style, I get excited. I love being able to express myself in this way. To me, it’s not exhausting; it feels natural. A thing that sets me apart from most is that I don’t have just one aesthetic, niche, or passion. I am multilayered and always have been. Every day I try to find some new sort of inspiration. My goal is to expand my knowledge so that I can improve my talents and become better skilled. The talent comes naturally but to be skilled takes time and lots of practice! Constantly I am researching trends, applying them to the ideas I have, and finding ways to incorporate them into my music and content creation. It took some growth and change to achieve comfortability and confidence within myself. Continually I am learning what works for me and what doesn’t. I realized that being myself and staying true to my core values has helped me overcome many challenges. Being an artist and a creative is not easy because you have to be okay with sharing vulnerable pieces of yourself. In my journey, I have learned a lot about myself. A big lesson for me is not to allow positive or negative feedback to determine my worth as an artist/creative. I’ve learned to create what I want because I am happy with it, not based on others’ opinions. Not everyone is going to be in support of my dreams, and not everyone will understand it. I’ve also learned that silence isn’t necessarily a negative thing. Results won’t come overnight, it’s just important to keep pushing on, and eventually, success comes. I hope that when people hear my story, it resonates with them, and they are inspired to also pursue their own passions.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Recently I have become a big foodie. I love trying out new restaurants and new foods. I love most foods. Charcuterie boards, pasta, seafood, Thai food, Mexican food, and Soul food, are some of my favorites. Basically everything. For a fun-filled day, I would start with brunch at Eggslut, it’s quick to get but still tastes delicious. In LA there are so many nice places to go to. Santa Monica pier is a must! Urth Cafe is also a top choice for me which is right next door. I love ordering a sunrise pizza with poached eggs, sausage, mozzarella cheese, and potatoes. After breakfast, I’d go walk on the Santa Monica boardwalk, do some shopping, thrifting of course and get some cute pictures on the beach. To end the day, I love eating at restaurants with a pretty view, and nice aesthetics. The Perch has an amazing view, and then LACMA is right around there, which is another perfect photo opportunity. There are still many places that are on my bucket list to try and visit!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In my first year in college, I separated from my love for music and fashion. I was so focused on being a freshman and getting adjusted to my new lifestyle. It was not until my junior year of college I joined an acapella group called VPR on my school campus where I was able to be in a group where everyone had a mutual passion for music. Joining this group re-sparked my love for artistry again. I got the opportunity to sing and create with like-minded people. From there on I got support from my mom who saw my passions. She recognized how interested I was in the music and fashion industry, so to support me she helped pay for music equipment. I am so appreciative of my mom for having my back through thick and thin. A big thank you goes to my friends who have supported me constantly. Reposting my music and even helping me network so that I can get new opportunities to help me grow in my passions, has made me feel so loved, and driven to keep moving forward. I don’t even have to mention names because they know who they are. I appreciate all the people who continue to believe in me and pushed me to continue, even when I felt hesitant. Without the support from my mom and friends, I definitely would not be continuing this far.
