We had the good fortune of connecting with Briana Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi BRIANA, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I created Spiked because there was a significant void in the wellness space that left a gap for people of color to feel authentically seen and celebrated. I wholeheartedly believe that health (not being skinny) is the greatest form of self-love and, more importantly, the greatest equalizer available to us in this world. Most other paths to achievement or elevation require an external person or factor, whereas health and wellness rely on personal discipline. The way we show up for ourselves in health and wellness typically fosters a confidence that allows us to apply the same discipline and intention in other areas of our lives. Therefore, I aimed to create a genuine space in an industry that oftentimes feels superficial.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has been a journey of grit, creativity, and relentless strategic execution. Before stepping into entrepreneurship, I built a strong foundation in digital marketing, brand strategy, and consumer engagement during my corporate career as a digital strategist for leading tech and media companies. Working at ViacomCBS, and across technology and financial service clients on the agency side, I developed innovative campaigns, crafted compelling brand narratives, and learned firsthand how to drive meaningful connections at scale. That strategic expertise laid the groundwork for my transition into entrepreneurship, where I combined my business acumen with my passion for people to create something truly transformative.

What sets me apart? I’ve done it as a full-time team of one. No outside capital—just vision, execution, and a deep commitment to building something that matters. I am most proud of proving that with strategy, persistence, and a clear mission, I could take an idea and turn it into a thriving business that serves people in two of the most competitive markets in the country.

Has it been easy? Absolutely not. Entrepreneurship has tested every part of me. It’s been a lesson in resilience, adaptability, and the ability to move forward even when the path isn’t clear. But the biggest lesson I’ve learned is to stop building quietly. Taking up space unapologetically is part of the game. Put your head down, do the work, … and then scream it from the mountaintops—because that’s how you make people believe in what you’re creating.

As I look ahead to my next venture, I carry these lessons with me: lead with intention, build with strategy, and never be afraid to claim your space. My story is about proving that bold ideas, backed by execution, can shift industries. And I want others to know: you don’t need permission to do something great—just the courage to start.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m still a newbie in LA, so I don’t think I have the credentials to create a flawless itinerary (without TikTok), lol. However, a few of my favorite spots would include a perfect beach day (this would probably take up multiple days of the trip because the beach is my favorite part of living in LA). We’d have to grab smash burgers from Burger She Wrote. Of course, we’d take a class at Spiked Wellness and another class at one of my other favorite fitness studios (I’ll never tell), lol. For dinner, we’d definitely stop by Linden, and for a cute coffee chat, File Systems of Coffee. Other than that, I’d say, “Get in, bestie, we’re exploring LA together!” One of my favorite things is aimlessly driving around to observe and discover. LA is vast, and I know I haven’t even scratched the surface.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband deserves so much credit in my story—so a huge shout-out to you, ZT! I’m also incredibly fortunate to have the best family and friends, who fill my life with joy, laughter, and unwavering support. There’s no Spiked without the team, so of course, a big shout-out to each squad leader and specialist at Spiked Wellness in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, and to Kaya and Shauna—thank you for believing in my vision and executing with intention and integrity. Community is the foundation of this brand, and we’ve been fortunate to build the most incredible clients and supporters who genuinely want to see Spiked succeed—shout-out to all of you!
