Meet Brianna Dutcher | Wedding & Lifestyle Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brianna Dutcher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brianna, how do you think about risk?
Ever since I was young, my mom always called me the daredevil child. I have always been the one to take risks and try something new, even if it was absolutely nuts. I knew that starting my own business as a wedding photographer in a highly saturated market could absolutely be a nightmare, but I also knew my passion for making art and capturing couples was stronger than that fear. There are so many highs and lows opening any kind of business, but luckily the work is so rewarding, and the people I get to meet along the way, have made every single risk worth it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When i graduated from college, I was so confused on what I wanted to do with my photo degree. I knew I wanted to work with people and tell their stories, but I felt like I hadn’t found something that really inspired me or was my calling. I started taking random jobs, working for other photographers, just to see what was out there and if anything caught my attention. A few months later, I had someone reach out to me to photograph their wedding, and after that, I was hooked. I fell in love with the way I was able to tell their story as a couple authentically behind my lens, and I adored capturing the little moments that aren’t seen by everyone throughout the day. The moments of mom crying as she zips up the bride’s dress, the couple after they walk down the aisle and celebrate together that they are finally married, the wedding party hyping up the couple before the reception, every wedding is so unique and every story is so incredible to capture, I knew I wanted to do this forever.
What I have learned from being a creative in a pretty saturated field is that it is so important to stay true to yourself and what inspire you. For me, I have always loved both the documentary and fashion styles of photography, so I get most of my inspiration from looking at that type of art, rather than always looking at what other wedding photographers are doing. My approach to capturing couples is more candid, with a little bit of editorial + romantic flair, which is what my couples always say they love most about my work.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people to thank who have helped me on my journey of photography and starting my own business in the wedding industry, but I have to shoutout a few that I wouldn’t have ever made it without. Firstly, my parents, Wendy and Rich, and my husband, Jonathan, for always believing in me when everyone else thought photography couldn’t be a job, and for supporting me and helping me follow my dreams. You’ve been there to help me laugh through the late nights editing, and have let me cry and vent in the stressful moments, too. Another huge inspiration that helped shape my art was my college professor, Paul D’Amato. Not only is his work incredibly expressive and inspirational, but the words and wisdom he shared with my class and myself is something I will never forget. I used to be incredibly anxious when photographing people, but Paul always helped guide me through that and was never afraid to give the best constructive criticism that I needed. I will forever be grateful for the lessons he taught and my work would never be what it is without him.
