We had the good fortune of connecting with Bright Lights and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bright, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I think intuition is the greatest gift we have. Whenever I’m nervous, excited or uncomfortable, especially creatively, it’s usually a sign that I’m headed in the right direction. Growth is painful but it’s a necessary part of the process. I don’t think I’ve ever given up on something that was truly in my heart to do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart is the way I see the world. It’s what makes me an artist. I began my career 15 years ago as a professional songwriter but I’ve spent the last 8 years developing my craft as a producer. The studio is where I feel the most at home but the stage is where I feel the most alive. I’ve been touring since I was 12 years old. So being on stage and out-and-about in the world is really important to me. I’ve been running my own record label for the past few years and that’s probably the most challenging thing I’ve ever done. Turning art into a business, especially in this climate, is a very difficult task. But it also taught me new ways of thinking and to be more creative on the business side. I’m proud to say I just finished my first full album, “New Dawn.” I also just launched a podcast called “Make It Make Cents,” which allows me to share my own story and explore how other creatives are affected by common practices in the music business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Lickndip is the best underground/after-hours party in LA, especially for techno. Solcasa is also an incredible party that brings the real roots and soul of house music. I love the parties Shaun Ross has been curating around the city… very fashion, runway, ballroom vibes. I like to go for dinner at Manny Maroquin’s restaurant Verse… incredible food/drinks and great live music. Black Rabbit Rose is great if you like intimate jazz/soul nights. Malibu Seafood is an amazing and affordable to place to eat and watch the sunset on a beautiful, summer day. The Getty and LACMA are my favorite museums in the city. I also love to spend the day at Manhattan Beach… it’s clean, cute and family oriented.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Alan Melina is someone I look up to a lot in this business. He has a 50+ year history in music and he was my first manager. Even today, a lot of the advice that he gave me early on in my career still speaks to me. I like people who challenge my ways of thinking and he’s changed my perspective on the music business many times over. Alan’s also just a great human being and that’s not always easy to find in this business.
