We had the good fortune of connecting with Brinny Ortiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brinny, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a newly divorced woman with a toddler, I was having a hard time finding a job with the same hours as the daycare provider I had for my daughter. I am from Brazil and I don’t have any family here so I needed to come up with something that would provide enough income to support us financially and where I could have a flexible schedule. I decided to resume my studies to finish my business management degree and I started working cleaning houses while still looking for another job. It was then that I realized I should focus on my cleaning business and making it grow so one day, I could work remotely and be there for my daughter when she was out of school. My business grew fast and today I have 6 people working for me full time. My small business made my American dream come true! I came to this country with $500 in my pocket and today I own my condo in El Segundo. It’s small but it’s ours. I recently started working as a travel agent as well and that will open more doors for our future.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My house cleaning business happened because of a need. A need for a flexible work schedule to be able to care for my 2 year old daughter as a single mom with no support whatsoever. I didn’t grow up saying that my dream was to clean houses, but I did fall in love with helping people. I love traveling and I love Disney! I grew up in Brazil saying that I was going to move to New York City and I did! I lived in Astoria Queens for 5 years. I also DREAMED of going to Disney one day! I recently realized that I wanted to help other families to achieve their dreams and what better way than starting a new business as a travel agent? Starting as a travel agent is hard! It’s a profession on the rise especially after the pandemic. I rely only on commission, but I have faith that my professionalism, knowledge and my will to help people will bring families back to me as clients. Meanwhile, I’m still running my cleaning business remotely from home. Getting here wasn’t easy! I scrubbed countless toilets, showers and mopped people’s floors, drove through snow storms and tornado warnings to get to my clients’s homes in Kansas City and back to my daughter. I cried a lot! I struggled a lot. Sometimes we didn’t have food. Would I do it all again? YES! It helped me be the person I am today and my parents are proud of me. I learned to be persistent and do whatever it takes to reach my goals! My hope is that my kids one day appreciate me the way I appreciate my parents. I’m currently working with Best Day Ever Vacations and I’m a travel agent coach. I go to Disneyland weekly with my 3 year old son and I choose to work with Disney Destinations only because it’s what I’m passionate about. It’s a pleasure and gratifying to help families from all over the world and make their dreams come true!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am 100% sure that all my friends would know I would take them to the Disneyland Resort! After picking my best friend up at LAX, I’d bring them home to El Segundo and explore our lovely tiny town and its lovely spots on Main Street. We got good food here! The next day we would explore the Southern California coast by train from Los Angeles to San Diego on the Pacific Surfliner. We would explore San Diego the next day, go to La Jolla and go out to eat. We would go to Disneyland next and spend a couple of days at the resort. Eaton Canyon Falls is a pretty view after a hike and I love watching the sunset at Point Vicente Lighthouse. I’d incorporate all these places if I could during a week long vacation!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
This might sound cliche but my parents are the reason I am where I’m at today. If it wasn’t for my mom forcing me to take English lessons after school, I wouldn’t be here. My father is an example of work ethics and he is the most hardworking man I’ve ever met. That’s why I work hard for my family! They supported my sisters and I and told us all they wanted was to see us happy. The three of us are all successful strong women! My parents taught us kindness, respect, real strength of unconditional love, morals and ethics, to treat others like we would like to be treated and so much more! My parents made us understand that every little gesture of kindness and generosity counts. I wish I could give more, like my mom. If I had one wish it would be to be close to them again. I am the person I am because of them and I’m proud of it!
