Meet Brittney Lee | Makeup Artist + Stylist, Designer, Founder

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittney Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittney, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I started my own freelance makeup business, I was 18 attending fashion design classes at college. I was pregnant and had my first daughter within that year. I was in grind mode while also figuring out motherhood.
I hustled non-stop. I thought that was the secret to success. In all honesty, I burned out by the time my third daughter was born 6 years later. Yes, I conquered my “5 year plan” because that’s what I was taught in high school but my personal relationship was toxic, I had no sense of self-love or self-care, I only worked and took care of my children. There was no such thing as balance. I developed anxiety and panic attacks. I really needed to figure my work- life balance out.
As a few years go on, I start focusing on my mental and physical health more. I learned to say no and not take on every single gig and client. I left my abusive ex. I started just overall taking care of myself and making friends.
Now? I don’t have anxiety. I’m able to still work a lot in all areas of what I love and have always wanted to do and still be a present mother and friend.
Life feels so much better.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m going to talk about my organic body care line, Little Mama Glow, I started a year ago because I really wanted to add my creativity to a luxury clean beauty line which isn’t something you see very often, if at all. I’ve also always had a really hard time finding truly clean skin products that I loved and that actually worked. With my background as a cosmetologist, I knew I could do this myself. My brand will always use certified organic ingredients, never any harsh chemicals, but you can see my “artsy” side come out in my branding.
My logo is reflective gold but when I think of new products, I always consider how I’d design my labels because each product has a different design but also coordinates together as a brand. I think I’ve really nailed the “luxury beach babe” branding. My motto is “self-care starts here” because if you feel good in your skin, your opportunities are endless.
I also really enjoy changing up my website and designing that to fit my vision as well.
My next steps are more publications and publicity for my brand and products. This mostly happens with consistency and time, as with any business when you’re wanting to grow.
There’s just so much creativity that goes into any business and I will always thrive in this. I’ve never seen myself working for anyone else.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ohh Los Angeles. My heart. It’s truly the city of angels to me on so many levels. This is a hard one!
I do have to say, we’d have to start our day at SunCafe in Studio City. Obsessed with this vegan restaurant! It’s even for those that aren’t really into the vegan lifestyle.
I’m honestly terrible with itinerary, haha, I just throw some things out there and see what I’m feeling in the moment.
The Bungalow in Santa Monica is a fun spot casual spot with your friends day or night.
Ysabel in West Hollywood is great for friends or a date.
You can never go wrong walking fashion district in DTLA.
I personally loved going to Venice Beach early Sunday mornings to watch the surfers.
It’s so relaxing and really grounds you. Plus, it’s a different side of LA rather than the typical non-stop rush of life.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In the entrepreneurial journey, different things help us in different stages. I knew I wanted to be in the fashion industry at 12 years old but it wasn’t until 7th grade my art teacher, Ms. Turpin, really encouraged and inspired me to pursue my talent in the creative field.
She brought in a fashion designer to teach us how to draw the human body to showcase our designs. I fell in love with fashion design immediately.
I didn’t have an easy childhood and truly appreciated her encouragement and belief in my artist abilities.
