Meet Brooke Knight | Co-Founder of Honest History Co.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooke Knight and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooke, what are you inspired by?
Children have always been a big source of inspiration. Even before I was a mom, I’ve always found children’s curiosity and endless imagination to be a source of creativity in my work.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Honest History is a children’s education company that creates magazines, podcasts, books, and school materials. Our core mission is encouraging readers to learn about the past in order to make a positive impact on the future. We educate kids about important people, places and events through factual and interesting stories they may not learn about in school, accompanied with original illustrations to spark creativity and critical thinking.
When we first launched in 2018, we knew it would be a challenge to start a print publication in a digital world. We spoke to many others who’d launched magazines and everyone told us the same thing: don’t do it. But we saw a need for tactile learning resources for kids and were confident in our vision and mission. Today, we’ve expanded into digital offerings, but our core product remains our quarterly print magazine enjoyed by kids at school and at home around the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a South Bay native, I tend to stay close to the beach cities. I would start the trip with a bike ride at El Porto and grab birria and papa tacos at Tacos El Goloso Cantina. I would end the day biking down to Old Tony’s on the Redondo Pier and having a Firechief (IYKYK).
Hiking is always a must while visiting LA, and there are countless trails around Griffith Park that are excellent (and kid friendly if you have a stroller). Thrifting is also another amazing pastime in LA, and there are no shortages of thrift stores to choose from (especially for mid-century furniture).
A few restaurants I always recommend are Mother Tongue (it is truly one of my favorite spots if you’re looking for a fun atmosphere—the muhammara hummus is to die for), and an old favorite Little Sister.
Lastly, I would end the trip by driving down to San Juan Capistrano for tea at the Tea House on Los Rios. I know, I know! It’s a drive, but trust me when I say it’s worth it! Be sure to make a reservation in advance, as it gets very busy on the weekend.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honest History wouldn’t be here without our readers—our young historians. They are truly the backbone of everything we do at Honest History. Their questions, suggestions, and creativity fuel everything we do.
I would also like to give a special shoutout to our core leadership team that make Honest History possible. Heidi is our staff historian, podcast writer, fact-checker, an illustrator, and does about ten other jobs on top of that. I am so lucky to work with someone who understands Honest History’s vision and is as excited about the work as I am. Lastly, David, my amazing husband, plays another vital role in the company. He works tirelessly to make sure Honest History as a business continues to thrive, and this company would not be here if it wasn’t for him.
