We had the good fortune of connecting with Brooks Betts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooks, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Despite an applauded ability to succeed in the traditional structures of education and corporate America, I always felt unaligned. But what did I do? Like many, I just worked harder, volunteered more and said yes to things I didn’t want to do, while wearing my burnout and “busy” as a badge of honor. During my early 30s I added motherhood to the list (x3!) and launched my own marketing business.
Not surprisingly, it caught up to me. My body started screaming and physical and mental health challenges started popping up. I couldn’t outrun it anymore, so I dove into a period of self-reflection and healing, which led me to reconnecting with my intuitive gifts, cultivating mindfulness practices and tapping into a level of awareness that has shifted my world.
I found myself straddling two worlds – the “woo-woo” and the “conventional” – and since I was uneasy in both extremes, I learned to blend them, reaching a balance that feels approachable and uniquely “mainstream” for real people, living in the real world.
My business offerings bring a uniquely grounded approach to energy work and mindfulness designed to support real women looking to expand their toolkit of self-care practices.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Under the umbrella of Brooks Betts, LLC I have a variety of offerings – and I’m proud of these offerings because I know I bring a uniquely grounded approach to them. While I’ll admit I love to get lost in the intuitive work (hello Pisces Sun!), my feet are very much on the ground here (thank you, Capricorn Rising), which makes me relatable as a practitioner and means my offerings translate in real, every day life.
I offer Reiki healing sessions, breathwork + meditation classes, community + corporate group events and an intuitive mentorship. All of these offerings are available in-person (Fairfield County, CT), virtually and in either 1:1 or group formats. I love working 1:1 with people, but also find it so rewarding to work with corporate teams, introducing the concept that intuition has a role in the workplace can create big shifts.
The hardest part of this business has been being vulnerable and putting myself out there. I battled a lot of imposter syndrome and “what will they think” thoughts, but once I launched I’ve felt a lot of flow – support, opportunities and momentum that I couldn’t have created if I tried. This is a key differentiator to how I’d define the first chapter of my career in marketing, which was full of force and void of pretty much all flow. I’m grateful for all I learned during that phase of my career though – both in terms of skillset and relationships, as well as work ethic and accountability. I’ve seen firsthand that the magic happens at that intersection of force + flow, or masculine + feminine, and that’s a lesson I love to share with my clients.
We’re taught that work should be hard, and that if we’re not exhausted we’re not doing it right. I too believed that for a long time, but I’m here on the other side to tell you there is another way – you just have to be brave enough to listen to your intuition, which means deciphering what’s meant for you vs. what others expect of you.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m so lucky to call Fairfield, CT home! It’s an amazing little beach town just about an hour outside of New York City – and has two colleges, which keeps the vibe young and fun (and a great supply of babysitters!).
I’m dreaming of summer, so let’s look at a “Summer Girls Weekend” Itinerary:
Friday
Shop downtown favorites: The Beehive, Element 50 and No. 299
Pack a cooler and kick off the weekend with happy hour at one of Fairfield’s five beaches
Followed by a sandy toes dinner at Malibu Taco
Saturday
Sunrise Yoga at Penfield Beach
Head into downtown for smoothies at Catch A Healthy Habit and coffee at Las Vetas
Hit the Farmer’s Market at Sherman Green
Relax at the beach or Stand Up Paddle Board
Dinner at The Sinclair or The Chelsea
Catch some live music at Fairfield Theater Company
Night cap at The Sea Grape
Sunday
Hop on a train to NYC for brunch at Sadelle’s or The Dutch followed by a walk on the High Line and shopping
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It takes a village! Firstly, I thank my husband John who to be honest doesn’t really “get” what I do, but he has been supportive and encouraging every step of the way!
My work started with some really great books that changed my perspective, namely “It Didn’t Start with You” (Mark Wolynn), “The Body Keeps the Score” (Bessel van der Kolk M.D.), “Signs; The Secret Language of the Universe” (Laura Lynne Jackson) and “Journey to the Heart” (Melody Beattie).
I’ve also had the pleasure to learn from and work with some amazing teachers and expanders, namely Nina Endrst my Reiki Master and Mentor. Other practitioners that I have learned from along the way include Jessica Stone (meditation and Tarot), Jennifer Sinclair (astrology), Frances Naude (distance reiki) and Jenni Adishian (manifestation).
