We had the good fortune of connecting with Buka Osondu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Buka, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When overlooking my journey thus far, risk has played a huge role in many of my successes. I was told that many risks may come to play but I wasn’t sure to what capacity. Being in my position as an International Entertainer, DJ has forced me to take many unexpected risks in order to elevate my brand and overall business. The risks taken in my life and career has made me more disciplined with my decisions and has opened plenty doors for me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a first generation child in America, while being strongly in tuned with my culture and other cultures outside of mine is what sets me apart from others. I am not just a Dj but an entertainer. It brings me joy when I’m on stage creating mixes and dancing in order to entertain my people. When you’re doing something you love, it doesn’t feel like a job. I look at it as a mission. I am most proud that I am able to be the voice for the people and with the platform that I have, I am able to shed light on not only the African music but African art and culture.
I believe anything you pursue as a profession will not be easy, it just takes a different level of dedication. My journey wasn’t easy at all it came with a lot of risks, opportunity costs and disappointments. In order for me to overcome these challenges I had to stay patient, trust my own timing and stay motivated. It was all a learning experience. I have learned that it’s not always about doing things now because you want to, it’s about doings things now that can live a legacy. I want the entire world to know that I am The Cultural Wolf and its my mission to spread the culture, sound and vibrations all across the globe.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend coming to NY for the week, there’s various places I would take them. I would take them to the newest African owned restaurant in Times Square called Lagos, hang out in Brooklyn, and most importantly I DJ every weekend so I would take them to my events so they can feel my experience live and direct.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a strong shout out to all the people that have had a hand in pushing my career to the next level and supporting me from the first year I decided to take the leap in becoming a DJ. This shout out goes to my late God-father for helping me pave my way as a DJ, my current management Buchi and Dozie, my former management MME, Muoka Mills and lastly my family for believing in me after I was able to prove myself.
