We had the good fortune of connecting with Bung gelo Mojisola and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bung gelo, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
A trail of unforeseen affirmations which have followed me, always served as omens to keep going. Even so, there are moments of uncertainty and days where you just don’t believe in yourself. Days where you’re battling projections of self-limitation from outwardly and inwardly. So many people are struggling in this same way, quietly thinking that others don’t have those moments. I think that’s largely what fuels me to keep at it. We have these connections and similarities with one another. The people who wear their humanity on their sleeves inspire me. Allow yourself to be influenced some. It comes instinctually to keep moving in order to pay it forward through any medium that speaks to me. Or through little things that I don’t see as significant. Those things later prove to be meaningful and when you get those affirmations you want to see everything through that the best way you know how. It gives life purpose. Keep an open heart and open eyes to see the signs. Then commit to following them.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an artist my process is intentional, yet randomized… and rather inefficient. Building my plane as I fly it.. while submitting to destiny. I’m just notating my observations along the way, which consumes me daily. I shuffle different mediums. As for my music I’m expressing my need and appreciation for others. It’s a beautiful process to disarm and “unharden” yourself. “I need you.. I like when you’re around.. you are important in my life.” These simple gestures I’ve committed myself to and would like to experience more of that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some island in an Airbnb with a pool, lots of trees, hammocks, fresh flowers everywhere. We’d walk to the neighborhood grocery store, chat with locals. I’d cook for them, something that involves coconut milk or curry. Mix some drinks, you know! DJ a nice playlist.. I’m a homebody that likes to host for friends and create an oasis intimately. I don’t have to be out too much. I like national parks a lot, too. Cabin trips, but if we went out for food, authentic Ethiopian is at the top of my list. My favorite is Nile Ethiopian in Richmond, VA, my hometown. Good food, good people can’t ask for much more <3
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Every person who dares and has dared to be themselves in the face of opposition. Someone who I’ve admired so much for being herself is my great Aunt Thomaseen. She always affirmed oddity, and was an accepting and original thinker. Her example taught me to resist expectations that stifle the creative mind of the individual. My aim has never been to win a popularity contest, just to be true. And showcase that you can nurture others as a stand out. I’d want to thank the people I’ve met along my journey who made space for my ideas to be heard. That gave something of themselves to contribute to the realization of those ideas. It’s been a magical and overwhelmingly beautiful process.
