We had the good fortune of connecting with BXB LOVE and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi BXB, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
i choose to pursue a career as an artist because of the role music has had in my life, and because of what those music-centric experiences have taught me about music’s power to gather people together around ideas. i’m interested in engaging with this potent channel of communication — music — in a way that aligns with a future and a global culture that centers LOVE. corrrrny, i know. but true. like the energy of love. the intention of love. love as a way of life. a way of being. the place from which we make our decisions about ourselves and the world. i choose a career as an artist because if i am going to choose a professional path in the current crony capitalist society we are collectively experiencing, i am going to choose something that i believe has a real fighting chance in playing some sort of role in moving us toward a society that is more supportive, sustainable, honest than the one we are living in.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

to me, BXB LOVE is an exploration of the experience of growing up in the 21st century, communicated through “genre-bending alternative pop music..” along with a wide variety of visual art and digital media. its like if Tumblr were a person, and that person was an artist? the digital mood board of a millennial trying to figure things out, personified as a character.. in a cartoon musical. i guess in a way it’s a caricature of me. everything i learn about me and the world, supersized and shared in a very public way.

before BXB LOVE, i create RnB pop music that talked a lot about my experience with heartbreak, sort of dissected some of the personal issues i was facing in a way that didn’t really empower me at all. like it kind of had this, “feeling sorry for myself” vibe. which i can acknowledge was important for me to explore and express at the time. but i outgrew it. thankfully. and wanted to focus my energy on a perspective and artistic expression that lifted me up, and in turn, hopefully, lifts up the people who listen to it. something that could expand me and my life, and maybe the lives around me. so i pivoted, and in letting go of my attachment to the old project, an identity i put a lot of value on — probably because of all the time, energy and resources that i had poured into the achievements of that project — i was able to see, choose, and grow into something that really reflects what i want to create in my art, relationships, life, career, and the world. and that’s BXB LOVE.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
my best friends and i love Disneyland, so that would definitely be a day on the itinerary aha. beyond that, the weekend would probably include an afternoon by the ocean, probably up in Malibu, to get some distance from the city. Funky Sole at El Cid, on Saturday night. Salt and Straw ice cream at some point. Korean BBQ or dumplings in K-Town. and i’ve always wanted to spend an evening at Tea At Shilo’s, a late-night tea house here in LA.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
there are literally so many people to thank. my parents, sister. teachers, and mentors growing up. my friends. artists i look up to. to all the people who have shown me what i don’t want for myself, or for my life. the list is huge.

today, i’d like to focus my thanks on my partner, Jaime. i’m grateful that my life brought me to someone who is the perfect counterweight to all that i am as a person. who sees the world differently than i do. someone who is unlike me in so many ways, but who i align with so wonderfully because of these differences. someone who is similar to me in the ways that matter. we challenge each other, and reflect such important lessons and opportunities for growth to one another. we support each other. we encourage each other. and we have made the choice to build something really powerful and beautiful together. to be able to move through life, art, and love in the way that we get to, feels like such a blessing. and i do not take it lightly.
