We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron Jenkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cameron, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I didn’t really have a conventional thought process at the start but after being let go from my last job I applied to be one of the muralist for Meijer’s Rivertown Market opening in Detroit. After getting selected and finishing the project I was kinda thrown into more murals because my work was in demand, and that it was just kind of a lot of people reaching out to me to do bigger and bigger murals so it was kind of just like jobs rolling in and I was like you know let me start a business out of this. The more my business grew the more I incorporated all the aesthetics of everything I liked building a brand that really reflected my love for creating and exploring that was bigger than just murals.

I got the name from one of my friends cousins calling me “Camo” and “Camouflage”, he said it a few times and it was just in the back of my head when I was coming up with the name for brand. I liked the name too beacuse it felt like it represented a lot of my art, cause there’s sometimes a underlined message to it so it’s almost kind of camouflaged within the actual work that I’m putting out

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
With “Camouflage” it’s really just me you know it’s like I said love to create, I love to explore creatively and geographically; it’s the root of everything within my business. The murals are one of the biggest things my business produces but my business is really everything I do creatively from video to personal projects.

I’m most excited to keep exploring things in tech, specially in video. I’m real big on video and music and kind of finding that happy marriage between both, so I’m really starting to get more deeper into animation and just really just deeper in the tech world while combining it with my murals and personal art in general

Starting off it wasn’t easy because it was mainly just me, I had a few people helping me along the way but just learning the in’s and outs of how to deal with money on a business level, finances and working with corporate as opposed to a smaller business was wild but I feel like I had diverse range of jobs up till this point kinda prepping me for working with any kind of person today.

I really want people to see that as a young creative you can really do this on a business level while putting out genuine work; and show them that this is what a young black entrepreneur can look like.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve had a lot of help along the way with people whether it’s somebody putting my name in a conversation, early mural jobs to help me build up my résumé of art to help from my manager Jainelle Robinson and fellow artist like Erinn Whitaker.

But one of my biggest supporters out of this journey has been my friends, they’ve been everything from my photographers to my editors to my second set of eyes and ears.
