We had the good fortune of connecting with Camila Grey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Camila, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the most important part of anyone having success in the music industry, is by creating art that defines your soul. It’s about not wanting to “fit in” and making consumerist art, just to turn a dollar. I think sticking to one’s own sense of style in a place that more often rewards least common denominator craft, is risky, but we don’t make music to please the masses. If it does, then great. If not, then great. Brand success is based on unapologetic individuality. We find power in being outliers.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I grew up with music beaming into my ears from a very young age. My father’s vinyl collection was played each night after dinner, and I sat on our shag golden carpet in the 80s listening to the likes of The Beatles, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, and Diana Ross, to name a few. I decided at age 7 I wanted to play like Mozart, and from then began my journey as a pianist. I went to Berklee College of Music to develop and also unlearn. I studied Music Business there, and ended up with my first job at Universal doing marketing in Boston.. From there I moved right to Los Angeles, and for 25 years have been making music and doing my thing. My first job in LA was doing A&R for a company called “Artist Direct” with founder Ted Field. I quickly grew bored of the admin and joined my friend’s band called “Mellowdrone” playing bass. From then on- it was all session music and touring nonstop. I worked for Hans Zimmer, Dr. Dre, Linda Perry, Kanye West(worked for his Label G.O.O.D music doing A&R) …I founded my own band called “Uh Huh Her’ and we were signed to Nettwerk/RCA and we had a wild run. I then joined Adam Lambert’s touring band and did that on and off for 13 years from 2010 until 2023. From there I joined Morrissey’s touring band in 2023, and I am still touring with him to this day. You could say, I’m very lucky.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love LA so much. It has been my home for 23 years, which is wild for me to even say.
My favorite spots are:
Kismet
Chateau Marmont-love to play their piano in their lobby bar
La Poubelle (used to run shows there in their side room),
Katsuya is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me
Ye Rustic inn – great dive bar.
Club Tee Gee in atwater village is great.
Farmer’s market in Atwater Village on Sundays. Epic.
Griffith Park observatory for a picnic and great views
Mulholland Drive at night for great views…

Favorite drive is through the canyon’s off the 101 North that drop onto PCH. (the Old Place is a great stop for wine and food off Mulholland Fwy)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to thank all of the incredible musicians whom I have admired since childhood, that have forged the path for my ears to dance in sound to: Depeche Mode, Radiohead, The Cure, Morrissey & The Smiths, Bjork, Debussy, Mozart, Abba, Queen, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Nicks, Nina Simone, Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, Nirvana- the music I grew up to, that defined endless moments of life. To their craft and talent, I salute them…

I’d love to thank my mentor in college: Tim Collins (ex Aerosmith manager) who led me toward pursuing my dreams with no fear.

I’d love to thank my parents: without their never-ending support I’d be on a far different path.
