We had the good fortune of connecting with Camila Pons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Camila, how do you think about risk?
I believe in doing one thing everyday that challenges me and wires my brain differently. There really isn’t a good reward without a big risk, it’s important for me to keep pushing and questioning my concepts and ideas, to always work on improving and adjusting my goals and to find great collaborators along the way. Production design is a craft that requires you to take big risks as far as trusting your concepts and pitching your vision, having a solid understanding of why you do what you do and voicing that confidently is a risk that has proven to yield incredible rewards, its also important to stay flexible but focused on The design principles you set for yourself and your team.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My life has never been what you would call normal. For this, I’m grateful. I have been fortunate enough to have awesome things happen to me. I have met a ton of interesting people and have been shaped by remarkable human beings as well as an incredibly bizarre collection of stories; These I treasure in my heart and mind.

I recently had to say goodbye to my childhood home, and as I watched the empty shell of what used to be my house, I realized that within these walls there was a home. There were memories, there was life, there was love. I realized I belonged there, and it would always belong to me.
Anyone can create beautiful things, but not everyone can make you feel like you belong, and as a designer this is what I set out to do. Build spaces in which people can look beyond brick and mortar and find themselves at home. Envision places that become worlds by their own right. To develop concepts so full of love and detail that they come alive. Everything tells a story, the way we live and interact with built environments speaks so much and so loudly about our essence. More often than not we are robbed of this privilege. We walk among white walls and clean-cut structures that feel so ordinary. We fall into an ordinary way of living with no attention to detail, no awareness. Sterile.

Production design is full of challenges, long nights, and daydreaming. Working and collaborating with people from all over the industry, allowing myself to explore many areas. This is what production design is to me, a big remix of thoughts and intentions, an awesome mixtape of stories and ideas from all kinds of places. Each person playing a different song, creating the perfect mix. Bringing an idea to life. That’s what film is to me. Beyond the mastery and beauty of the screen, there’s a million different stories happening, begging to be heard. We need only stop for a moment and appreciate the finer things.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love taking friends and family to prop houses and fun shops! My ideal weekend includes an early hike, a trip to Loupiotte Kitchen, a visit to a museum (LACMA and Academy Museum day!) and if we’re up for it .. theme parks or a roadtrip to Santa Barbara!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Being away from home has made me incredibly aware of what home means to me and how much of it I carry with me. I firmly believe I am made of my family and all the people I’ve met that have loved me and allowed me to love them back, I see pieces of everyone of them in me and my work. My courage I owe to my mother, my relentless to my father, my sensibility to my grandmother, my positive outlook to my sister, my humour, music taste and kindness to my brothers, and my ability to view life and approach it confidently I owe to my incredible friends.
