We had the good fortune of connecting with Carlos Sanz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carlos, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson that the entertainment industry has taught me is to value myself above everything else and above outside judgment, it’s encouraged me to try over and over again to accomplish my goals, and never give up. That is something I will always take with me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For almost a decade, I have been navigating the maze of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, carving out a path for myself in music and acting. Growing up in the small Mediterranean town of Altea, Spain, I was always captivated by American movies and the music recorded in Los Angeles. My sister and I often reimagined and recreated scenes, like the iconic intro to Baywatch, running across the beach with the orange life savers our mother had to buy for us.
Getting to Los Angeles wasn’t easy. I began my journey as a professional tennis player in Spain, which led me to Florida for college. Immersing myself in a new culture was challenging, but my resilience and discipline helped me graduate with honors.
After that, I started auditioning and eventually made my way to California, where I felt truly free. I took every class I could find—voice, acting, dancing—and learned as much as possible. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to appear in national commercials for brands like Honda, State Farm, and Home Depot. In 2021, I transitioned into music, releasing my first two songs, “Me Gusta Más” and “Dime Si Te Vienes.” “Me Gusta Más” charted in the top 30 on iTunes Spain and gained popularity across Latin America and beyond.
Today, I’m most proud to share my latest achievement: acting in my first feature film, The Nana Project, alongside Academy Award Winner Mercedes Ruehl, Nolan Gould (Modern Family), and Will Peltz (Manifest). This heartwarming comedy, about a grandmother becoming a TikTok sensation and qualifying for the state championship, is now available on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and more. In the film, I play Luis Amarillo, a funny chess player with a spicy relationship on camera with my wife, Carmensita.
My story is one of fighting for your dreams. I believe in never stopping, even through the ups and downs, as good things come to those who wait. Moving halfway across the world and dedicating years to my craft will continue to transform this small-town boy into a true star.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite restaurant in LA is Yamashiro, not just because of the food but because of the insane view of the city that makes you feel like you’re part of a movie set. If I had somebody come and visit me, I would definitely take them to Santa Monica & Malibu, one of my favorite beaches is Zuma Beach because of it’s white sands. would definitely take a day trip to the sequoia forest to see those incredible million year old trees. Definitely wouldn’t miss taking them out to a karaoke night in LA, which often feels like American Idol auditions, it really makes you realize the amount of great talent in the city, Well, also having a great time!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe the person that deserves the most credit and recognition for everything that has happened in my life is my mother. As I grow up, I often realize how important it is for me to have her guidance and support with everything I do, and also keep me grounded, knowing that there’s someone so much smarter and mature than me to keep me in check.
