We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina Mancias and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolina, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
The passion for this industry started from an early age, with the crazy performances I used to create in my own shower. I remember my mom knocking on the door of the bathroom saying I needed to hurry because I was taking too long, but for me I was only in the middle of a world tour show. From there it just escalated to doing theatre in school, voice and dance lessons, making small music videos and Shortfilms with my phone, it was the little things that fulfilled me.
I realized that telling stories, being vulnerable and using my body and voice to express an idea, feeling, action, situation, etc. was such a wonderful thing to do on a daily basis that when I learned I could do this everyday I never wanted to go back.
I feel like as an artist this career is a game of chance, where the love for it and the love for the art is bigger than what the outcome could be, because we never know where this crazy industry can take us, but that’s the exciting part of each artists journey.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Studying Musical Theatre and being able to perform daily its such a dream come true by itself, pursuing this was never a question of “should I do it?” But more of a “how am I going to do it?” Specially coming from Monterrey, Mexico where theatre it’s not a huge thing like it is here. Hence getting where I am today has been a bumpy road, where the artistic part is only 25 percent of that struggle. Leaving home and moving to another country where there is a language barrier, a different culture and values, has been one of the most difficult parts of my career. However every day that goes by, I learn to embrace that cultural difference and apply it as much as I can into my performances. Being able to understand now both ways of living it’s such a gift, the idea of knowing two languages helps me expand my understanding of more and more people, for example sometimes there are words that they just can’t be translated.
I’m so excited to connect with people in so many levels, for them to see themselves and their story reflected in what I’m doing, for them to feel comfortable in their own skin, because they know a part of them is being projected out there. As an actor one of the most important, yet challenging parts it’s telling the truth. It’s so hard to stand on a stage, or in front of a camera and just blurt out a reality that in that moment it’s your job to portray no matter if it’s something that you have experienced personally or not, and even though that’s a big challenge, that’s one of the most exciting parts of this type of artistic expression.
Something I always try to remember is that me as an artists and human, will never be a finish product, we are in constant development, learning new things, figuring out life, living new adventures, etc. which means our art will be in constant motion all the time and that’s what makes it unique and fresh.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would have to go to some of the iconic places here in LA like The Griffith Observatory, a bike ride over Venice Beach and maybe a walk over Santa Monica, but something I would love to take them on would be a hike, there are so many spots with gorgeous views in the city and outside in the surroundings. Definitely a museum would be the next thing we would go to, either the Broad or the Getty. For some food options In n Out, a must, and at night a nice rooftop restaurant bar like Mama’s Shelter would be a good place to end the day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents, they are my biggest supporters, the amount of sacrifices they’ve done for me to be doing what I love the most could not even fit in this page. My friends and loved ones who believe in me and have given me the strength to keep doing what I am doing. And to Mexico because I always take a little bit of my home wherever I go.
