Meet Carrie-Ann Executive Director Youth Academy of Dramatic Arts

We had the good fortune of connecting with Carrie-Ann and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carrie-ann, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk and me? We’re old friends. As an improviser, I’ve spent decades leaping into the unknown with nothing but trust, a ‘yes, and’ attitude, and the belief that something magical will happen if I stay present. That philosophy has shaped not just my career, but my life.
Risk is the spark that ignites creativity, the necessary leap before you learn you can fly (or at least land on your feet). Whether it was co-creating The Second City’s Los Angeles Diversity in Comedy Festival, expanding YADA’s programming, or diving into executive leadership, every big move I’ve made came with uncertainty—but also immense possibility. You just gotta get out of your own way.
I believe risk is about calculated courage. It’s not about being reckless; it’s about being bold, prepared, and open to failure as part of growth. You have to learn to LOVE the fail. That’s easier if you surround yourself with people you trust. In theater, in leadership, and in life, risk is what takes us from ‘safe and fine’ to ‘extraordinary and unforgettable.’ And that’s exactly the kind of journey I want to be on.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is storytelling—whether through improvisation, theater, or leadership. At its core, my work is about creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and empowered. As an improv artist and educator, I thrive in the spontaneity of the moment, where trust, collaboration, and a willingness to fail forward lead to something truly unforgettable. As an executive director and producer, I bring that same creative mindset to building institutions, shaping programming, and fostering communities that celebrate artistry and innovation.
What sets me apart? I say ‘yes’—a lot. I believe in joy as a guiding force and in the power of art to transform lives. That philosophy has shaped my journey, from teaching at The Second City to producing over 200 shows to leading YADA through expansion and growth. I’m most proud of my ability to blend business acumen with artistic integrity, ensuring that creativity isn’t just nurtured but sustained.
Was it easy? Absolutely not. Like any artist and leader, I’ve faced uncertainty, financial hurdles, and moments of doubt. But improv teaches you to embrace failure as part of the process. I’ve learned that resilience comes from community, that success requires both vision and adaptability, and that every challenge is an opportunity to innovate.
I want the world to know that my brand—my story—is about possibility. Whether I’m leading a team, producing a show, or helping a student find their voice, I’m here to make space for people to take creative risks, to grow, and to do something extraordinary. Because, at the end of the day, the best art—the best leadership—comes from the courage to say, ‘Let’s see what happens.’ If you’re a nerd then I want to champion whatever you’re nerding out over.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooooooh, there’s too many things I want to suggest!
:
1) Hike Fryman Canyon but from the Mulholland entrance, it’s a little rainforest in there.
2) Go to the Rose Bowl Fleamarket, a literal stadium of second-hand treasures.
3) Eat breakfast at République, the best pastries and coffee in town.
4) Go the the Broad Museum in DTLA for fantastic contemporary art, admission is free but make a rez
5) Musso & Frank for legendary Hollywood martinis as smooth as old film stars.
6) Watch a Broadway show at Pantages Theater, eat at Jemma for dinner, get their “Wagyu Italian Beel Hero”
7) If you’ve got kids, take them to Rockin’ Awesome Improv Show on Saturdays at 11am at YADA, it’s so fun.
8) In the summer months go to LACMA on Fridays with a picnic on the grass for Live Jazz Night.
9) Go dancing at The Abbey, with epic dance floors and drag.
10) Spend ALL your money and eat at Providence and get the $100 margarita it’s super worth it.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my dear friend, Danny Lutman. He’s a phenomenal producer who has helped me out above the norm. When I needed help producing the Rockin Awesome Improv Show he stepped in. When I needed support managing my new improv program at YADA he was so detailed and joyful that I still can’t get over what a rockstar he is.
