We had the good fortune of connecting with Carson Ezell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carson, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My aspirations ever since I was a kid was to be a part of the popular music community. It started with learning drums at the age of 9. From there it transferred into learning piano, guitar, and music production throughout high school. Artists like blink182, Muse, Queens of the Stone Age, and Tool pushed me to continue practicing and grinding at my craft. As I continued to practice, I realized this is my true passion. Once I realized this, moving to Boston to pursue music at Berklee, and now moving to LA working as an engineer and drummer was second nature. Truly, I do not gain as much satisfaction than when I do when I am making music.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I am a musician. Nowadays that includes a whole treasure trove of different skills. For me, I play drums, primarily in the pop, punk, and rock genres. In addition, I produce, engineer, and sometimes grab a guitar and play too. I know it’s a cliche “I listen to all music”, but it rings quite true to my story. Listening to my discography, many people are always floored in the sense of “oh wait I thought he was a punk drummer” after listening to an edm song I released. I really love music. It has informed and inspired most of my decisions in life. After taking drum lessons as a kid, it propelled me to jump into a giant pool of possibilities in music. This was punctuated especially when I attended the Berklee College of Music after graduating high school. This stepping stone lead me to learn recording production in the Netherlands at Wisseloord Studios and form a punk band there called the Ratbags. Berklee lead me to work with collaborators that I work with to this day in Los Angeles such as Andy Estrella and Teona Zak. It also lead me to get connected with Universal Music Group where now I work as a coordinator at Interscope Records. I say this all as a general overview. There are a lot of challenges that come my way along this journey. Imposter syndrome eats every musician at some point, and for me it finds its way into my headspace weekly. Overtime I’ve learned to overcome these thoughts but especially the game of comparisons in the music world is both inspiring and convicting. Along this journey of course there are rough spots, but what I’ve learned is resilience is key in music. There will always be road blocks to this career path, but what sets those who succeed and those who fail is grit and resilience. With all of this said, I ultimately want to leave a mark on culture, and bless and impact those who listen to the music I help create.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am relatively new to the city so my recommendation list may be paltry, but here are a few spots that I get excited to visit.

Amoeba Records

No Vacancy

Scum and Villainy

Echoplex

The Wiltern

Mel’s Diner

Venice Beach

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All of my success is dedicated to my family who has supported me my whole life. Even though music can be a winding and chaotic career path, they have encouraged me no matter what. In addition, I would like to thank those who collaborate with me on a constant basis. This would be an essay including all of their names. To those who are in this group, you know who you are. Thank you.
