We had the good fortune of connecting with Catia Ojeda and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Catia, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Well, nothing changes your work/life balance like becoming a parent! I have 2 kids, born in 2014 and 2018. I have found that being a mom has made me a better artist, despite having less time for myself. Obviously, there are plenty of times when I wish I had more time to work on this audition or flesh out this idea, but most of the time I like having limited time to work. It forces me to concentrate harder on the task at hand and it allows me to cut out the unnecessary noise. It’s a gift to work well under pressure!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an actor. I’m very grateful and proud that I am able to make my living, support my family and secure health insurance from my work. Is it always easy? No. Is it even sometimes easy? Never! While I’m able to make my living, I certainly don’t have the cachet to pick and choose my work. While I am grateful, I’m in a position where I must say yes to almost every paying job that comes my way. So, while I am in a wonderful position that I’ve come to enjoy through a combination of hard work and good luck (because luck and right time/right place cannot be understated as a factor of success in the insane entertainment business), my biggest challenge at this exact point in my career is artistic satisfaction. You know, that feeding the soul passion that got most artists willing to throw themselves into this crazy life in the first place. For me, my first love was theater. Caring for my young children and then caring for my young children through a freaking pandemic rightly became my top priority over the last few years. I have worked as an actor throughout all this time, but I haven’t done much work that was soul-feeding. Now that my children are a bit older and in school (hallelujah!), I’m excited to have more time to feed my artist’s soul.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Even though I spend the majority of my time in my minivan to and fro the kids’ schools, Target or Costco, I DO have a few LA recommendations!

I love live theater and performance and there are so many fantastic theaters doing exciting, high-quality work at affordable ticket prices. Besides The Ahmanson and The Taper, I highly recommend checking out The Antaeus Theater Company in Glendale, The Boston Court in Pasadena and The Fountain Theater in Hollywood.

No trip to LA is complete with a visit to the beach, of course. You can drive up the PCH from Santa Monica and stop wherever tickles your fancy BUT- if you’re doing a beach day with kids, I highly recommend Paradise Cove in Malibu- parking (not cheap, but hey where is there cheap parking in this town?), bathrooms, the water is pretty calm and they have a fun restaurant right there in the sand.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents. When you are gifted with a strong foundation, support and love as a kid, you are better equipped to spread your artistic wings and fly as an adult. I do my best to pay it forward to my own kids.
